وَقالوا لَو تَشاءُ سَلَوتَ عَنها

وَقالوا لَو تَشاءُ سَلَوتَ عَنها

فَقُلتَ لَهُم فَإِنّي لا أَشاءُ

فَقُلتَ لَهُم فَإِنّي لا أَشاءُ

And they said, 'If you wished, you would cease longing for her.'

They said, "If you wished, you could have turned away from her."

So you said to them, 'Indeed, I do not wish to.'

So I said to them, "Indeed, I do not wish to."

وَكَيفَ وَحُبُّها عَلِقٌ بِقَلبي

وَكَيفَ وَحُبُّها عَلِقٌ بِقَلبي

كَما عَلِقَت بِأَرشِيَةٍ دِلاءُ

كَما عَلِقَت بِأَرشِيَةٍ دِلاءُ

And how could I, when love for her clings to my heart,

How could I, when love for her clings to my heart

Just as buckets hang from ropes?

As a bucket clings to the pulley rope of a well?

لَها حُبٌّ تَنَشَّأَ في فُؤادي

لَها حُبٌّ تَنَشَّأَ في فُؤادي

فَلَيسَ لَهُ وَإِن زُجِرَ اِنتِهاءُ

فَلَيسَ لَهُ وَإِن زُجِرَ اِنتِهاءُ

Love for her has grown within my heart;

For her there is a love that grew in my heart

So it has no end, even if rebuked.

So it has no end, even if chastised.

وَعاذِلَةٍ تُقَطِّعُني مَلاماً

وَعاذِلَةٍ تُقَطِّعُني مَلاماً

وَفي زَجرِ العَواذِلِ لي بَلاءُ

وَفي زَجرِ العَواذِلِ لي بَلاءُ

And many a reproaching woman tears me apart with blame,

And a blamer cuts me with rebuke,

And in the rebukes of reproaching women lies torment for me.

Yet in the rebukes of blamers is my affliction.
