And among the things that grieved me was that, on the day she bade farewell,

she said to us, “I entrust to God those I know.”

And how can I console my soul after parting from her,

when my breast has grown tight from concealing my love for her?

So by God, and by God, whose station is exalted,

indeed, my spirit nearly departed without my bidding.

My two friends, pass by my grave after my death,

and say to Layla, “This is one slain by estrangement.”
