Ah, often have I dallied with Layla, and been led
Long have I played with Layla, and led me on
To pleasure by a heart ever pursuing beautiful women.
To wantonness a heart for song too prone.
وَطالَand has lasted long اِمتِراءُmilking الشَوقِlonging عَينِيَmy eye كُلَّماwhenever
نَزَفتُI shed دُموعاًtears تَستَجِدُّwell up anew دُموعُtears
And long has longing milked my eye; whenever
Long have mine eyes, with waiting for her sake,
I shed tears, fresh tears well up.
Contended through the night, till morning broke.
فَقَدfor indeed طالَhas lasted long إِمساكيmy clutching عَلىat الكَبِدِthe liver الَّتيwhich

For long have I clutched at my liver, which
Long on my liver have I borne the load
This morning bears fissures from love of Layla.
Of love for Layla and its morning goad.
