Dariyya
سُقيتِmay you be watered الغَواديmorning rains مِنas an عُقابٍeagle عَلىupon وَكرِa nest
Ah, O eagle of the nest, the nest of Dariyya,
O hawk of the nest and nest of Dhariyah,
May the morning rains water you, eagle upon a nest.
You have watered the valleys from a hawk above the nest
أَبينيtell plainly لَناto us لاmay not زالَcease ريشُكِyour feathers ناعِماًsoft
وَلاand may not زِلتِyou cease فيin صَيدٍhunting مُخَضَّبَةَbloodstained الظُفرِthe talon
Tell us plainly; may your feathers always remain soft,
Show us that your feathers are still soft,
And may you always hunt with bloodstained talons.
And that you are still stained with blood in hunting
أَبينيtell plainly لَناto us قَدindeed طالَhas lasted long ماthe time that قَدalready تَرَكتِناyou have left us
بِعَمياءَin blind uncertainty لاnot نَدريwe know أَنُصبِحُshall we reach morning? أَمor نَسريwe travel by night
Tell us plainly; long have you left us
Show us for we have long missed you,
In blind uncertainty, not knowing whether to await morning or travel by night.
In darkness not knowing if we travel or settle
وَقَفتُI stood عَلىat مُرّانَMurran أَنشُدُasking after ناقَتيmy she-camel
وَماand not هَلَكَتwas lost ليof mine مِنany قُلوصٍyoung she-camel وَلاnor بَكرِyoung male camel
I stood at Murran, asking after my she-camel,
I stood at Murran reciting to my she-camel,
And no young she-camel or young male camel of mine was lost.
And no ewes or young she-camels have been lost to me
وَماand not أَنشُدُI seek البُعرانَthe camels إِلّاexcept صَبابَةًyearning
بِواضِحَةِfor one radiant in الخَدَّينِboth cheeks طَيِّبَةِsweet in النَشرِfragrance
And I seek the camels only out of yearning
I do not recite poetry except to a pretty one
For a woman with radiant cheeks and a sweet fragrance,
With prominent cheeks and pleasant smile
مُفَلَّجَةِwith gaps between الأَنيابِthe canine teeth لَوif أَنَّthat ريقَهاher saliva

With spaced canine teeth—if her saliva
Whose teeth are wide apart that if her saliva
Were used to treat the dead, they would rise from the grave.
Could cure the dead, they would rise from their graves
إِذاwhen ذُكِرَتis mentioned لَيلىLayla أُسَرُّI rejoice بِذِكرِهاat her mention
كَماjust as اِنتَفَضَshook itself العُصفورُthe sparrow مِنfrom بَلَلِwetness القَطرِrain
When Layla is mentioned, I rejoice at her mention,
When Layla is mentioned, I become happy at her mention
As a sparrow shakes itself free of the rain's wetness.
As a sparrow stirred from the drizzle of rain
فَقالَthen said جَميعُall الناسِthe people لَمّاwhen نَشَدتُهاI asked after her
بَلىyes وَفَريقٌand a group قالَsaid وَاللَهِby God ماnot نَدريwe know
Then all the people, when I asked after her, said,
So all the people said when I recited it
'Yes'; and a group said, 'By God, we do not know.'
Yes, and a group said by God we do not know
تَداوَيتُI sought a cure مِنfrom لَيلىLayla بِلَيلىwith Layla عَنِfrom الهَوىpassion
كَماjust as يَتَداوىtreats himself شارِبُthe drinker الخَمرِwine بِالخَمرِwith wine
I sought to cure my passion for Layla with Layla,
I was cured of love by Layla from love
As a wine-drinker treats himself with wine.
As one who drinks wine is cured by wine
أَلاAh! زَعَمَتclaimed لَيلىLayla بِأَنthat لاnot أُحِبُّهاI love her
بَلىyes, indeed وَاللَياليby the nights العَشرِthe ten وَالشَفعِand by the even وَالوَترِand by the odd
Ah, Layla claimed that I do not love her.
Indeed, Layla claimed I do not love her
Yes, I do—by the ten nights, the even and the odd!
Yes, by the ten nights, the even and the odd
بَلىyes, indeed وَالَّذيby Him who لاnot يَعلَمُknows الغَيبَthe unseen غَيرُهُanyone but Him
بِقُدرَتِهِby His power تَجريsail السَفائِنُthe ships فيin البَحرِthe sea
Yes—by Him who alone knows the unseen,
Yes, by Him who none knows the unseen but Him
By whose power ships sail upon the sea;
By His power ships sail in the sea
بَلىyes, indeed وَالَّذيby Him who نادىcalled مِنَfrom الطورِthe Mount عَبدَهُHis servant
وَعَظَّمَand exalted أَيامَthe days الذَبيحَةِthe sacrificial offering وَالنَحرِand slaughter
Yes—by Him who called to His servant from the Mount,
Yes, by Him who called His servant from Mount Sinai
And exalted the days of sacrifice and slaughter!
And exalted the days of sacrifice and slaughter
لَقَدindeed فُضِّلَتhas been favored لَيلىLayla عَلىabove الناسِthe people مِثلَlike ماthe way that

Indeed, Layla has been favored above all people, just as
Indeed, Layla was preferred over people like
The Night of Decree has been favored above a thousand months.
The Night of Power was preferred over a thousand months.
