أَلاAh! ياO غُرابَcrow البَينِparting لَونُكَyour color شاحِبٌpale
وَأَنتَand you بِلَوعاتِof the agonies الفِراقِseparation جَديرُdeserving
Ah, O crow of parting, your color is pale,
Oh raven with faded feathers of separation,
And you deserve the agonies of separation.
You are worthy of the sorrows of parting.
فَبَيِّنso explain لَناto us ماwhat قُلتَyou said إِذwhen أَنتَyou واقِعٌperched
وَبَيِّنand explain لَناto us ماwhat قُلتَyou said حينَwhen تَطيرُyou fly
So explain to us what you said while you were perched,
Tell us what you said when you alighted,
And explain to us what you said while flying.
And what you said when you took flight,
فَإِنfor if يَكُis حَقّاًtrue ماwhat تَقولُyou say فَأَصبَحَتthen may … become
هُمومُكَyour cares شَتّىmany and varied وَالجَناحُand the wing كَسيرُbroken
For if what you say is true, then may
For if what you say be true, that your cares are many
Your cares become many and varied, and your wing be broken.
And your wing hampered and broken,
وَلاand may … not زِلتَyou cease to be مَطروداًoutcast عَديماbereft لِناصِرٍof a defender
كَماjust as لَيسَthere is no ليfor me مِنagainst ظالِمِيَّmy oppressors نَصيرُdefender
And may you remain forever outcast, bereft of a defender,
And you still an outcast, without a protector,
Just as I have no defender against my oppressors.
As I have none to help against oppressors.
