Ah, my aching liver, from loving one who does not love me,

And from sighs that have no end.

Tell me: if I did not give you love willingly,

And when you refused, there was no refusal in me,

Will you abandon me to death? I am surely dying.

And there is no survival for perishing souls.

When evening found her, the encampment's growing-ground lay between me and her,

And between me and you lay arta shrubs on level ground and alaa shrubs.

So there is no reunion unless we are brought closer

By young she-camels, with serenity trailing at their tails.

They cleave the wilderness's breadth, carrying us; we have

Upon their backs no cure but them alone.

When the men say, 'They will reach water tomorrow at midmorning,'

They race one another till their watering comes at nightfall.

When their riders are asked for news, no answer is given

Upon their backs, unless it is shouted aloud.
