Ah, does the sun's rising send a greeting
Does not the rising sun convey a greeting
To Layla's household, even once—or does its setting?
To Layla's family once or twice as it sets?

Is Layla to be beaten if I pass by Dhu al-Ghada?
Is Layla to be blamed if I pass by one who bears a grudge,
And what fault is Layla's if her wolf crosses the land?
And what is Layla's fault if the ground's dust conceals her?

Yes, and I am to be stoned if I say, 'How lovely
Yes, and I am to blame if I say bravo
Are the gleaming edges of Umm Amr's front teeth, and their sweetness!'
To the sunset upon Um Amr's dunes and their fragrance.
