يَقولُsay لِيَto me الواشونَthe tale-bearers لَيلىLayla قَصيرَةٌshort
فَلَيتَthen, if only ذِراعاًa cubit عَرضُbreadth لَيلىLayla وَطولُهاand her height
The tale-bearers tell me, “Layla is short.”
Then would that Layla's breadth and height were only a cubit!
وَإِنَّand indeed بِعَينَيهاin her two eyes لَعَمرُكَby your life شُهلَةًa bluish-gray tinge
فَقُلتُso I said كِرامُthe noblest الطَيرِbirds شُهلٌbluish-gray عُيونُهاtheir eyes
And indeed, by your life, her eyes have a bluish-gray tinge.
So I said, “The noblest birds have bluish-gray eyes.”
وَجاحِظَةٌand bulging-eyed فَوهاءُwide-mouthed لاno بَأسَharm إِنَّهاindeed, she
مُنىdesires كَبِديmy liver بَلnay كُلُّall of نَفسيmy soul وَسولُهاand its longing
And she is bulging-eyed and wide-mouthed—no matter; she is
my liver's desire—nay, my whole soul and its longing.
فَدَقَّso batter صِلابَhard pieces الصَخرِof rock رَأسَكَyour head سَرمَداًforever
فَإِنّيfor I إِلىuntil حينَthe time of المَماتِdeath خَليلُهاher lover
So dash your head against hard rock forever;
for I am her lover until the hour of death.
