أَياO جَبَلَmountain of الدومِal-Dawm الَّذيwhich فيin ظِلالِهِits shade
غَزالانِtwo gazelles مَكحولانِboth kohl-eyed مُؤتَلِفانِboth in harmony
O Mount al-Dawm, in whose shade
are two kohl-eyed gazelles, living in harmony.
غَزالانِtwo gazelles شَبّاboth grew up فيin نَعيمٍbliss وَغِبطَةٍand happiness
مِنَof الناسِpeople مَذعورانِboth frightened مُحتَبِسانِboth secluded
Two gazelles who grew up in bliss and happiness,
frightened of people, keeping themselves secluded.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends أَمّاas for أُمُّmother of عَمروٍAmr فَمِنهُماthen she is one of the two
وَأَمّاand as for عَنِabout الأُخرىthe other woman فَلاthen do not تَسَلانيyou two ask me
My two friends, Umm Amr is one of them;
and as for the other, do not ask me.
أَفيis it on كُلِّevery يَومٍday أَنتَyou آتٍcoming to دِيارَهاher dwellings
بِعَينَينِwith two eyes إِنساناهُماtheir two pupils غَرِقانِboth drowned
Do you come to her dwellings every day,
with eyes whose pupils are drowned in tears?
إِذاwhen اِغرَورَقَتbrimmed with tears عَينايَmy two eyes قالَsaid صَحابَتيmy companions
لَقَدindeed أولِعَتbecame addicted عَيناكَyour two eyes بِالهَمَلانِto streaming tears
When my eyes brim with tears, my companions say:
"Your eyes have surely become addicted to streaming tears."
نَأَتgrew distant دارُهُمtheir home عَنّيfrom me وَفَرَّقَand separated بَينَناbetween us
جَرائِرُmisdeeds جَرَّتهاbrought them about يَديmy hand وَلِسانيand my tongue
Their home grew distant from me, and we were parted
by wrongs my hand and tongue had brought about.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became عَنهُمfrom them أَجنَبِيّاًa stranger وَلَمand not أَكُنI was
كَذاكَlike that عَلىat بُعدٍa distance وَنَحنُwhile we were دَوانيclose to one another
So I became a stranger to them, though I had not been
so far removed when we were close.
وَكَمand how many مِنof هَوىًlove لاnot يُستَطاعُis possible طِلابُهُits pursuit
أَتىcame دونَهُin its way مَرٌّa bitter turn مِنَof الحَدَثانِfate's vicissitudes
And many a love cannot be pursued:
a bitter turn of fate has come between.
وَعَزَّيتُand I consoled نَفسيmy soul وَهيَwhile it بَينَamid صَبابَةٍyearning
تَجودُyields up its life وَهَلand is there ليfor me بِالفُراقِagainst separation يَدانِtwo hands (strength)
And I consoled my soul as, amid yearning,
it ebbed away—yet have I the strength to bear separation?
طَوقُan encircling band السِرَّthe secret فيin نَفسيmy soul عَنِfrom الناسِpeople كُلِّهِمall of them
ضُلوعٌribs عَلىover ماwhat يَحتَوينَthey contain حَوانيcurving protectively
The girdle of the secret in my soul, hiding it from everyone,
is formed of ribs that tenderly enfold what they contain.
إِذاif أَنتَyou لَمnot تَجعَلset aside لِنَفسِكَfor yourself شُعبَةًa portion
مِنَof السِرِّthe secret ذاعَspread السِرُّthe secret كُلَّevery مَكانِplace
If you do not reserve for yourself a portion
of the secret, the secret spreads everywhere.
