فَإِنso if تَزجُرينيyou drive me away عَنكِaway from you خيفَةَfor fear of كاشِحٍa spiteful foe
بِحاليin my plight فَإِنّيthen indeed I ماas far as عَلِمتُI know كَئيبُsorrowful
So if you drive me away from you for fear of a spiteful foe,
If you spurn me out of fear of a slanderous critic
In my plight, then, I am, as far as I know, sorrowful.
Of my condition, know that I'm not downcast.
وَقَدand indeed حَلَّhas befallen بيupon me ماwhat كُنتَyou were عَنهُfrom it بِمَعزِلapart
لِحَينيto my doom فَمَوتيso my death ياO سُعادُSuʿād قَريبُnear
And what you were untouched by has befallen me,
What has befallen me now was not of your doing;
To my doom; so my death, O Suʿād, is near.
My death, O Happiness, is surely near.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمُضناًsurely wasted مِنfrom جَوايَmy burning anguish صَبابَةًardent longing
يَقولُsays لِيَto me الواشونَthe slanderers أَنتَyou مُريبُsuspect
And I am indeed wasted by my burning anguish and longing.
I'm wearied by the youths' idle rumors that
The slanderers tell me, “You are suspect.”
Say "He's a dubious man" when I pass.
أَجارَتِناO our neighbor إِنَّindeed الخُطوبُmisfortunes تَنوبُrecur
وَإِنِّيَand indeed I صَبٌّlovesick ماas long as أَقامَstands عَسيبُʿAsīb
O our neighbor, misfortunes recur,
My companions, hardships come in waves,
And I am lovesick as long as ʿAsīb stands.
And I'm a youth whom no misfortune downs.
أَجارَتِناO our neighbor إِنّاindeed we غَريبانِtwo strangers هاbehold هُناhere
وَكُلِّand every غَريبٍstranger لِلغَريبِto the stranger نَسيبُkin
O our neighbor, we are two strangers right here,
My friends, we're both strangers in this place;
And every stranger is kin to another stranger.
Each stranger finds kinship with strangers around.
غَريبٌa stranger يُقاسيendures الذِلَّhumiliation فيin كُلِّevery بَلدَةٍtown
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهُfor him فيin العالَمينَthe worlds حَبيبُa beloved
A stranger endures humiliation in every town,
A stranger endures humiliation in every land,
And he has no beloved in all the worlds.
With not a single friend in all the earth.
فَلاso do not تَسمَعيlisten فيناabout us مَقالَةَa statement جاهِلٍan ignorant person
فَرَبّيfor my Lord كَماas قَدalready تَعلَمينَyou know مُجيبُone who answers
So do not listen to an ignorant person's words about us;
So pay no mind to any fool's idle talk about me,
For my Lord, as you already know, answers.
For as you know, my Lord is He who responds.
