أَحِنُّI yearn إِلىfor لَيلىLayla وَإِنeven though شَطَّتِhas gone far النَوىseparation
أَحِنُّ إِلى لَيلى وَإِن شَطَّتِ النَوى
بِلَيلىwith Layla كَماjust as حَنَّmoaned اليَراعُthe reed flute المُثَقَّبُthe pierced
بِلَيلى كَما حَنَّ اليَراعُ المُثَقَّبُ
I yearn for Layla—even though separation has carried
I long for Layla though fate has carried her far,
Layla far away—as the pierced reed flute moans.
As the perforated jar longs for water.
يَقولونَthey say لَيلىLayla عَذَّبَتكَhas tormented you بِحُبِّهاthrough love for her
يَقولونَ لَيلى عَذَّبَتكَ بِحُبِّها
أَلاAh! حَبَّذاhow dear is ذاكَthat الحَبيبُthe beloved المُعَذِّبُwho torments
أَلا حَبَّذا ذاكَ الحَبيبُ المُعَذِّبُ
They say, “Layla has tormented you through love for her.”
They say, "Layla tormented you with her love!"
Ah, how dear is that tormenting beloved!
But blessed is the lover who is so tormented!
