Ah, who will aid a soul whose inner garment is love of Layla,
whose companion, after defiance, is submission?
بِهاin it عَلَقٌa clinging attachment مِنfrom حُبِّlove لَيلىLayla يَزيدُهُincreases it

In it is an attachment born of love for Layla, strengthened by
the passing of nights, their long ones and their short.

And I have not seen Layla since the day I caught her unawares;
so catching her unawares that day stirred a vision of her.

One of the fair-skinned, large of frame, as though
her waistcloth were wound around a mound of loose sand.

in a lair beside a leafy tree whose fruit is sweet,

is lovelier than Layla—nor a dark, lowering cloud
among the rainclouds, whose outpouring tore the night away from it.

at night by the most drenching of steady rains and its drops.
