إِلّا الثُمامَ وَإِلّا مَوقِدَ النارِ
O Layla’s dwelling at the edge of the encampment, you have been effaced,
Oh dweller of Layla's house in Siqat Al Hayy, it's all erased
Except for the thumam grass and the fire’s hearth.
Except the dove and except the fireplace
ماnot تَفتَأُyou cease الدَهرَall your life مِنbecause of لَيلىLayla تَموتُyou die كَذاlike this

All your life you keep dying for Layla like this,
The ages won't cease passing while Layla lives and dies as such
At a place where she stood, or beside a dwelling.
Whether she stood still or passed by a house
أَبلىhas worn away عِظامَكَyour bones بَعدَafter اللَحمِthe flesh ذِكرُكَهاyour remembrance of her
أَبلى عِظامَكَ بَعدَ اللَحمِ ذِكرُكَها
كَماjust as يُنَحِّتُhe whittles قِدحَan arrow shaft الشَوحَطِof shawhat wood الباريthe carver
كَما يُنَحِّتُ قِدحَ الشَوحَطِ الباري
Your remembrance of her has worn away your bones after your flesh,
Your memory of her wasted your bones after the flesh
As the carver whittles an arrow shaft of shawhat wood.
As the engraver etches the polished cup
