دَعونيleave me دَعونيleave me قَدalready أَطَلتُمyou have prolonged عَذابِياmy torment
وَأَنضَجتُمُand you have scorched جِلديmy skin بِحَرِّwith the heat of المَكاوِياthe branding irons
Leave me, leave me—you have prolonged my torment,
Let me be, let me be, you have prolonged my torment
and scorched my skin with the heat of branding irons.
And toughened my skin with the heat of sufferings
دَعونيlet me أَمُتdie غَمّاًof sorrow وَهَمّاًand worry وَكُربَةًand anguish
أَياah وَيحَalas for قَلبيmy heart مَنwho بِهِin him مِثلُthe like of ماwhat بِياin me
Let me die of sorrow, worry, and anguish.
Let me die grieved, anxious and sorrowful
Ah, alas for my heart! Who suffers as I do?
Oh, my heart, who is like me in distress?
دَعونيleave me بِغَمّيwith my sorrow وَاِنهَدواand go forth فيin كَلاءَةٍprotection
مِنَfrom اللَهِGod قَدalready أَيقَنتُI have become certain أَنthat لَستُI am not باقِياremaining alive
Leave me with my sorrow, and go forth under the protection
Let me be with my grief, give up on me
of God; I am certain that I shall not live on.
I'm certain I will not last, by God's will
وَراءَكُمُkeep back, all of you إِنّيindeed I لَقيتُhave encountered مِنَfrom الهَوىlove
تَباريحَagonies أَبلَتhave worn away جِدَّتيmy freshness وَشَبابِياand my youth
Keep back! From love I have endured
After you, I have found love
agonies that have worn away my freshness and my youth.
To have ruined my strength and youth
بَرانِيَhas wasted me شَوقٌlonging لَوif بِرَضوىupon Radwa لَهَدَّهُwould have shattered it
وَلَوand if بِثَبيرٍupon Thabir صارَwould have become رَمساًburial earth وَسافِياand windblown dust
Longing has wasted me; had it struck Radwa, it would have shattered it,
I'm torn by a longing, that if appeased
and had it struck Thabir, it would have turned to burial earth and windblown dust.
Would calm, and if ignored, would blow away
سَقىmay water اللَهُGod أَطلالاًruins بِناحِيَةِnear الحِمىthe protected pasture
وَإِنeven though كُنَّthey were قَدalready أَبدَينَthey revealed لِلناسِto people ماwhat بِياails me
May God water the ruins near the protected pasture,
May God water the ruins in the precincts of love
though they have shown people what ails me.
Though they have revealed to people my inner secrets
مَنازِلُdwellings لَوif مَرَّتpassed عَلَيهاby them جَنازَتيmy bier
لَقالَwould surely say الصَدىthe echo ياO حامِلَيَّmy two bearers اِنزِلاboth alight بِياwith me
Dwellings—if my bier passed by them,
My dwellings, if my funeral passed by them
the echo would say, 'O my two bearers, alight with me.'
The echo would say: O bearers, bring me down here
فَأُشهِدُso I call to witness بِالرَحمَنِby the Most Merciful مَنwhoever كانَis مُؤمِناًa believer
وَمَنand whoever كانَis يَرجوhopes in اللَهَGod فَهوَthen he دَعاmay pray لِياfor me
So I call to witness, by the Most Merciful, whoever believes,
So I bear witness, for whoever believes in the Merciful
and whoever hopes in God—may he pray for me.
And hopes in God, that he prays for me
لَحاmay rebuke اللَهُGod أَقواماًpeople يَقولونَsay إِنَّناindeed we
وَجَدناwe have found الهَوىlove فيin النَأيِdistance لِلصَبِّfor the lovelorn شافِياhealing
May God rebuke those who say, 'We
God has tested people who say: We have found
have found love at a distance to be a cure for the lovelorn.'
Distance from loved ones a cure for passion in youth
فَماthen what بالُis the matter with قَلبيmy heart هَدَّهُhas shattered it الشَوقُlonging وَالهَوىand love
وَأَنضَجَand has scorched حَرُّthe heat of البَينِseparation مِنّيwithin me فُؤادِياmy heart
Then why is my heart shattered by longing and love,
Why then has longing and love torn my heart
and my heart within me scorched by the heat of separation?
And the heat of separation ripened my innermost being?
أَلاah لَيتَif only عَينيmy eye قَدalready رَأَتhas seen مَنsomeone who رَآكُمُhas seen you
لَعَلِّيَperhaps I أَسلوfind relief ساعَةًan hour مِنfrom هُيامِياmy love-madness
Ah, if only my eye had seen someone who has seen you,
Oh, if only my eyes had seen those you saw
perhaps I might gain an hour's respite from my love-madness.
Maybe I'd find some rest from my infatuation
وَهَيهاتَand far beyond reach أَنthat أَسلوI find relief مِنَfrom الحُزنِsorrow وَالهَوىand love
وَهَذاand this قَميصيmy shirt مِنfrom جَوىthe burning anguish of البَينِseparation بالِياworn out
Yet relief from sorrow and love is far beyond my reach,
Alas, I cannot rest from grief and passion
and this shirt of mine is worn out by separation's burning anguish.
My shirt is threadbare from the heat of separation
فَقُلتُso I said نَسيمَbreeze of الريحَthe wind أَدِّconvey تَحِيَّتيmy greeting
إِلَيهاto her وَماand what قَدalready حَلَّhas descended بيupon me وَدَهانِياand overwhelmed me
So I said, 'Breeze of the wind, convey my greeting
I told the breeze: Convey my greeting
to her, and what has befallen and overwhelmed me.'
To her, and what has befallen me, my condition
فَأَشكُرَهُso I may thank it إِنّيindeed I إِلىfor ذاكَthat شائِقٌlonging
فَياso oh لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether يَكونُthere will be تَلاقِياa meeting
Then I would thank it; I long for that.
I thank it, for I yearn for that meeting
Oh, if only I knew—will there be a meeting?
If only I knew, would there be a reunion?
مُعَذِّبَتيmy tormentress لَولاكِbut for you ماnot كُنتُI would be هائِماًlove-mad
أَبيتُI spend the night سَخينَhot العَينِof the eye حَرّانَburning باكِياweeping
My tormentress, but for you I would not be love-mad,
My tormentor, without you I'd not be sleepless
spending the night with burning eyes, aflame and weeping.
Spending the night with red, weeping eyes
مُعَذِّبَتيmy tormentress قَدalready طالَhas lasted long وَجديmy yearning وَشَفَّنيand has wasted me
هَواكِlove for you فَياso O لِلناسِpeople, help! قَلَّhas dwindled عَزائِياmy endurance
My tormentress, my yearning has lasted long; I am wasted by
My tormentor, my passion has gone on too long
love for you. O people, my endurance has dwindled!
Your love has cured me - how little people console me!
مُعَذِّبَتيmy tormentress أَورَدتِنيyou led me to مَنهَلَthe watering place of الرَدىdeath
وَأَخلَفتِand you disappointed ظَنّيmy expectation وَاِحتَرَمتِand you cut short وِصالِياmy union with you
My tormentress, you have led me to death's watering place,
My tormentor, you led me to the valley of rejection
and dashed my hopes and cut short my union with you.
You disappointed me and disregarded our union

My friend, come, delight me in my weeping

For my soul is exhausted and most troubled

My two friends, I have been sleepless while you both slept,
My friend, I have stayed up while you slept
because of lightning from Yemen; so sit down and comfort me.
In the flashes of lightning from the Yemen - come justify me

سَقيمَينِboth ill لَمnot أَفعَلI would act كَفِعلِكُماas you both have acted بِياtoward me
My two friends, if I were well and you both were
My friend, if I were well and you two were sick
ill, I would not act as you have acted toward me.
I would not do to you what you have done to me
خَليلَيَّmy two friends مُدّاboth spread out ليfor me فِراشِيَmy bedding وَاِرفَعاand both raise

My two friends, spread out my bedding for me and raise
My friend, make my bed for me and lift
my pillow; perhaps sleep will take away what ails me.
My pillow - maybe sleep will take away my distress
خَليلَيَّmy two friends قَدalready حانَتhas come وَفاتِيَmy death فَاِطلُباso both seek

My two friends, my death is at hand; so seek
My friend, my time has come - seek for me
a bier and shrouds for me, and ask forgiveness for me.
Shroud and coffin and pray forgiveness for me

And if I die of the sickness of longing, convey
And if I die from lovesickness, convey
my greeting to her who is like the light of the sun.
To the sun-like beauty my greetings
