وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنand though لَمdid not آتِcome to لَيلىLayla وَأَهلَهاand her family
لَباكٍsurely weeping بُكاthe weeping of طِفلٍa child عَلَيهِupon him التَمائِمُamulets
And I, though I have not visited Layla and her family,
Though I did not visit Layla or her people,
surely weep as a child with amulets upon him weeps.
I weep with the crying of a child bedecked with amulets,
بُكاًweeping لَيسَis not بِالنَزرِscant القَليلُslight وَدائِمٌand unceasing
كَماjust as الهَجرُestrangement مِنfrom لَيلىLayla عَلىthroughout الدَهرِtime دائِمُunceasing
A weeping neither scant nor slight, and unceasing,
Weeping copiously, not just a little, and lasting
just as estrangement from Layla endures for all time.
As my estrangement from Layla lasts forever.
هَجَرتُكِI forsook you أَيّاماًfor days بِذيat Dhu الغَمرِal-Ghamr إِنَّنيindeed I
عَلىover هَجرِestrangement أَيّامٍdays بِذيat Dhu الغَمرِal-Ghamr نادِمُregretful
I forsook you for days at Dhu al-Ghamr; indeed I
I estranged you for days in Dhu l-Ghamar, and I
regret those days of estrangement at Dhu al-Ghamr.
Regret having estranged you for days in Dhu l-Ghamar.
فَلَمّاthen when مَضَتpassed أَيّامُthe days of ذيDhu الغَمرِal-Ghamr وَاِرتَمىand swept away
بِيَwith me الهَجرُestrangement لامَتنيblamed me عَلَيكِon your account اللَوائِمُthe reproaching women
Then, when the days at Dhu al-Ghamr passed, and I was swept away
When the days of Dhu l-Ghamar had passed and were over,
by estrangement, the reproaching women blamed me over you.
Estrangement from you clings to me and the blames attack me.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَذاكَand that الهَجرَestrangement ماnot تَعلَمينَهُyou know it
كَعازِبَةٍlike a straying she-camel عَنaway from طِفلِهاher calf وَهيَwhile she رائِمُyearns for her young
And I, amid that estrangement you do not know,
That estrangement - you do not know it -
am like a she-camel far from her calf, still yearning for it.
Is like a woman separated from her child, wandering.
أَلَمdid you not تَعلَميknow أَنّيthat I أَهيمُam lovesick بِذِكرِهاat the mention of her
عَلىat حينِa time لاnot يَبقىremains عَلىfor الوَصلِunion هائِمُa lovesick lover
Did you not know that I am lovesick at the mention of her,
Do you not know that I rave with the mention of her
when no lover remains yearning for union?
At a time when no ardent lover clings to union?
أَظَلُّI keep on أُمَنّيI hold out hopes to النَفسَmy soul إِيّاكِyou خالِياًalone
كَماjust as يَتَمَنّىlongs for بارِدَcool الماءِwater صائِمُone who fasts
Alone, I keep holding out hopes of you to my soul,
I entertain my soul's longing for you in solitude
as one who fasts longs for cool water.
As a faster yearns for cold water at noon.
