أَجِدَّكِare you in earnest? ياO حَماماتٍdoves بِطَوقٍwith a neck-ring
فَقَدfor indeed هَيَّجتِyou have stirred مَشغوفاًone smitten with love حَزيناsorrowful
Are you in earnest, O ring-necked doves?
I find you, o ring-necked doves
For you have stirred a sorrowful, love-stricken man.
You've stirred a melancholy lover
أَغَرَّكِhas it deceived you? ياO حَماماتٍdoves بِطَوقٍwith a neck-ring
بِأَنّيby the fact that I لاnot أَنامُI sleep وَتَهجَعيناand you slumber
Has it deceived you, O ring-necked doves,
Does it fool you, o ring-necked doves
that I do not sleep while you slumber,
That I do not sleep while you slumber?
وَأَنّيand that I قَدindeed بَرانيhas wasted me away الحُبُّlove حَتّىuntil
ضَنِنتُI became miserly وَماand not أَراكِI see you تَغَيَّريناyou change
and that love has wasted me away until
That love has afflicted me so
I grew miserly, while I see you unchanged?
I've become sickly while you stay the same
أَرادَwilled اللَهُGod مَحلَكِyour dwelling فيin السُلامىal-Sulama
إِلىtoward مَنwhom بِالحَنينِwith plaintive cooing تَشَوَّقيناyou yearn
God willed your dwelling in al-Sulama;
God has willed your place to be in peace
toward whom do you yearn with your plaintive cooing?
To one who longs and yearns for you
وَلَستِand you are not وَإِنand even if حَنَنتِyou coo أَشَدَّmore intense وَجداًin longing
وَلَكِنّيbut I أُسِرُّI conceal وَتُعلِنيناand you proclaim
Nor are you, though you coo, more intense in longing;
And even if you show tenderness, I'm in greater agony
but I conceal it, while you proclaim it.
Yet I confide while you proclaim
وَبيand in me مِثلُthe like of الَّذيthat which بِكِis in you غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I
أَحُلُّI free myself عَنِfrom العِقالِthe tether وَتَعقِليناand you keep your reason
And I feel the same as you, except that I
And I'm like you, except that
break free of the tether, while you keep your reason.
I lose my reason while you keep yours
أَماindeed وَاللَهِby God غَيرَother than قِلىًaversion وَبُغضٍand hatred
أُسِرُّI conceal وَلَمand never أَزَلhave I ceased جَزِعاًanguished حَزيناsorrowful
Indeed, by God, it is not aversion or hatred
By God, nothing but aversion and hate
that I conceal; I have always been anguished and sorrowful.
I confide, and have always been sad and woeful
لَقَدindeed جَعَلَتhave begun دَواوينُrecords الغَوانيof fair women
سِوىexcept ديوانِthe record of لَيلىLayla يَمَّحيناthey are erased
The records of fair women have indeed begun,
The diaries of lovers have made
except for Layla's record, to be erased.
All but Layla's diary fade
فَقِدماًfor long ago كُنتِyou were أَرجىmost hoped-for الناسِof all people عِنديto me
وَأَقدَرَهُمand the most capable of them عَلىof ماwhat تَطلُبيناyou seek
For long ago, you were my greatest hope among people,
Once you were the most hoped for to me
and the most capable of them of attaining what you seek.
And most capable of what you seek
أَلاtake heed لاdo not تَنسِيَنever forget رَوعاتِthe terrors of قَلبيmy heart
وَعِصيانيand my defiance of عَلَيكِfor your sake العاذِليناthe reproachers
Take heed: never forget the terrors of my heart,
Do not forget my heart's tremors
and my defiance, for your sake, of those who reproached me.
And my defiance of those who blame me
