تَقاصَرَhe has drawn back عَنfrom لَيلىLayla وَرَثَّتand have grown worn وَسائِلُهhis ties
تَقاصَرَ عَن لَيلى وَرَثَّت وَسائِلُه
The enemies say—may God not bless the enemies—
The enemy says, may God not bless the enemy
“He has drawn back from Layla, and his ties have worn thin.”
He fell short of Laila, and his means have become depleted
وَلَوand even if أَصبَحَتshe came to be لَيلىLayla تَدِبُّshe hobbles عَلىon العَصاthe staff
وَلَو أَصبَحَت لَيلى تَدِبُّ عَلى العَصا
لَكانَwould surely be هَوىlove لَيلىLayla جَديداًfresh أَوائِلُهits beginnings
لَكانَ هَوى لَيلى جَديداً أَوائِلُه
And even if Layla came to hobble with a staff,
And if Laila were to walk with a cane in the morning
Love for Layla would be as fresh as at its beginning.
The beginnings of love for Laila would be renewed
