إيانat the time أذwhen هيَshe ناشيءٌyoung أملودُsupple
Rumaylah made her dwelling at al-Mutbaʿ,
The maiden walked with a swaying gait,
At a time when she was young and supple.
Whether she was coming or going I could not guess.
تهتلُّshe smiles عَنrevealing شَنَبِcool freshness اللِّثاتِthe gums كأنَّهاas though they were
عَسَلٌhoney بماءِwith water سَحابةٍa cloud مَبرُودُcooled
She smiles, revealing the cool freshness of her gums, as though they were
She reveals teeth like hailstones
Honey cooled with water from a cloud.
When her mouth smiled below her shapely nose.
وَلَقَدand indeed حَسَدتُّI envied إزارَهاher waist-wrap وقِنَاعَهاand her veil
إنَّindeed الفَقِيرَthe poor man لذِيof one possessing الغِنىwealth لَحَسُودُsurely very envious
And indeed I envied her waist-wrap and her veil;
And truly I envied her veil and her robes -
Indeed, the poor man is deeply envious of the wealthy.
The poor man is always envious of the rich.
