When Lubna is mentioned, a sigh comes over you,

And the caller repeats her name for you, and you come to.

I myself have testified that you are a graceful maiden,

Full-hipped, and yours is a noble face.

And you do not repay me with companionship,

Nor can I endure estrangement from you.

And you have divided my heart: half of it

Is captive, and half is bound fast in cords.

My morning draught, when the sun rises, is remembrance of you,

And at evening, remembrance of you is my evening draught.

When I soothe my passion or abandon it,

Sobs come, driving the tears forth.

As though love between my ribs and entrails,

And between my collarbones and uvula, were a blaze.

    فَبَعضٌ لِبَعضٍ في الفِعالِ فَأوقُ

    So if you have not yet gained this knowledge, then ask;

For some are superior to others in deeds.

Ask: has any companion whose company I kept hated me?

And has any fellow traveler among the company tired of my camp?

And do noble folk dislike my companionship

When a deep, dreaded pass turns gray with dust?

And I conceal love's secrets, putting them to death,

When a glib joker divulges them.

Time and the slanderers strove to come between me and her,

So the cord of union was severed, though it was strong.

Is patience anything but turning away, so I no longer see you

In your land, except when it lies along my route?

I want to forget you, yet am drawn back

To you by a fragment of my scattered soul.
