عيدَwas visited while ill قَيسٌQays مِنfrom حُبِّlove of لُبنىLubna وَلُبنىand Lubna
داءُmalady of قَيسٍQays وَالحُبُّand love داءٌa disease شَديدُsevere
Qays was visited, sick with love for Lubna; and Lubna
Qays suffers from his love of Lubna, and Lubna
Is Qays’s malady, and love is a grievous disease.
The malady of Qays is love, and love is a grave disease
وَإِذاand when عادَنيvisited me in sickness العَوائِدُwomen visiting the sick يَوماًone day
قالَتِsaid العَينُthe eye لاnot أَرىI see مَنthe one whom أُريدُI desire
And when the women visit me in sickness one day,
And if one day the old ones return to me
The eye says, “I do not see the one I long for.”
The eye says, I do not see whom I want
لَيتَif only لُبنىLubna تَعودَنيwould visit me in sickness ثُمَّthen أَقضيI die
أَنَّهاfor she لاnot تَعودُshe visits فيمَنamong those who يَعودُvisit
If only Lubna would visit me, and then I could die—
Would that Lubna might return to me, that I might decide
For she does not come among those who visit.
That she will not return to those who do return
وَيحَalas for قَيسٍQays لَقَدindeed تَضَمَّنَhas harbored مِنهاfrom her
داءَa malady خَبلٍof madness فَالقَلبُso the heart مِنهُfrom it عَميدُsorely stricken
Alas for Qays! From her he has indeed contracted
Woe to Qays! From her he has taken on
A malady of madness, so the heart is sorely stricken by it.
An addled sickness, so staunch is his heart
