بِلَيلى العامِرِيَةِ أَو يُراحُ
It was as though my heart, the night it was said they would depart at dawn
As though my heart on the night it was said "Morning shall come"
with Layla al-ʿĀmiriyya, or at evening,
At Leila's populous abode will rest or depart,

were a sandgrouse overpowered by a snare, spending the night
A wild cat whose glory solitude divided; so it passed the night
tugging against it, its wing already caught.
Wrestling with itself, its wing being trapped.
