Is it the radiant light of lightning, whose gleam appeared to you,

At Dhu al-Athl, among Bishah's sandy tracts, that you watch?

Yes, I am lovesick, bound there

    To one who neither draws me near nor comes close;

And one whose coldness I lament, whose love is

Rare delights that were a match for one who seeks affection.

May God pardon Umm al-Walid! Does she not see

The depths to which my love has fallen—how she toys with me—

And pity one whose life almost ebbed away

That morning when journeying camels made toward me, necks outstretched?

And such was my sickness at my beloved's departure that whenever

A rider came traveling from the direction of your land,

I fell ill; so they brought a healer and incantations,

And said, "He knows medicine well—a practicing physician."

He came and treated me, and long continued his visits

To me, until incantations and treatment wore him out.

And what he knotted brought me no benefit,

Nor the hopes the experienced physician offered me,

Nor the counter-charms with which he washed me through the night,

Whenever the descending star appeared to me.

And they departed; a sturdy she-camel had borne your Lubna away,

Swift-swimming, and a tawny male with heaving flanks.

You would think, in a mistaken surmise, that it

And its rider seek a dwelling in Mecca.

So no—by Him whose House's corners I have stroked,

Circling it among those who circle and cast pebbles—

Never shall I forget you while Thabir stands firm in its place,

    And al-Muhassab remains a neighbor to al-Hajun.
