أَرىI see بَيتَthe house of لُبنىLubna أَصبَحَhas become اليَومَtoday يُهجَرُis abandoned
وَهُجرانُand forsaking لُبنىLubna ياO لَكَto you الخَيرُgoodness مُنكَرُabhorrent
I see Lubna's house has become deserted today;
I see the house of Lubna has been abandoned today
and forsaking Lubna—may good be yours—is abhorrent.
How strange is Lubna's abandonment, yet it brings you good
أَتَبكيdo you weep عَلىfor لُبنىLubna وَأَنتَand you تَرَكتَهاleft her
وَأَنتَand you عَلَيهاover her بِالمَلاbefore the people أَنتَyou أَقدَرُmore capable
Do you weep for Lubna when you yourself left her,
Do you cry over Lubna when you were the one who left her?
though you yourself have greater power over her before the people?
And you had power over her with wealth, you had more
فَإِنso if تَكُنِbe الدُنياthe world بِلُبنىthrough Lubna تَقَلَّبَتhas turned
عَلَيَّagainst me فَلِلدُنياthen the world has بُطونٌbellies وَأَظهُرُand backs
So if the world, through Lubna, has turned
If the world had turned for Lubna, then for me are bellies and backs
against me, then the world has bellies and backs.
Indeed in it there was a place for honesty,
لَقَدindeed كانَthere was فيهاin her لِلأَمانَةَfor trust مَوضِعٌa place
وَلِلقَلبِand for the heart مُرتادٌa haven وَلِلعَينِand for the eye مَنظَرُa sight
There was indeed in her a place for trust,
And for the heart a refuge, and for the eye a scene
and a haven for the heart, and a sight for the eye;
And for the thirsty wanderer a draft with its saliva
وَلِلحائِمِand for the circling one العَطشانِthe thirsty رَيٌّquenching of thirst بِريقِهاwith her saliva
وَلِلمَرَحِand for the merry one المُختالِthe swaggering one خَمرٌwine وَمُسكِرُand an intoxicant
and for the thirsty, circling one, thirst quenched by her saliva;
And for the swaggering drunkard, wine and intoxicants
and for the merry swaggerer, wine and intoxicating drink.
It was as if she were a swing for me between ropes
كَأَنّيas though I were لَهاbecause of her أُرجوحَةٌa swing بَينَbetween أَحبُلٍropes
إِذاwhenever ذُكرَةٌa memory مِنهاof her عَلىacross القَلبِthe heart تَخطُرُflits
Because of her, I am like a swing between ropes,
Whenever a memory of her flickers across my heart
whenever a memory of her flits across my heart.
