أُريدُI desire سُلُوّاًforgetfulness عَنof لُبَينىLubayna وَذِكرِهاand her memory
فَيَأبىbut refuses فُؤاديmy heart المُستَهامُlovesick المُتَيَّمُenslaved by love
I long to forget Lubayna and the thought of her,
I long to ask about Layla though her memory pains me;
But my lovesick, love-enslaved heart refuses.
My wretched heart rejects recalling her, its ruin.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI said أَسلوهاI will forget her تَعَرَّضَintruded ذِكرُهاher memory
وَعاوَدَنيand returned to me مِنfrom ذاكَthat ماwhat اللَهُGod أَعلَمُknows best
Whenever I say, 'I will forget her,' her memory intrudes,
When I say "Ask of her," the thought of her appears,
And from that returns to me what God knows best.
Reviving in me what only God knows.
صَحاcame to his senses كُلَّevery ذيpossessor of وِدٍّlove عَلِمتُI knew مَكانَهُhis whereabouts
سِوايَexcept me فَإِنّيfor I am ذاهِبُbereft of العَقلِreason مُغرَمُconsumed by love
Every lover whose whereabouts I know has come to his senses,
Each loving friend found solace, while I
Except me, for I am bereft of reason, consumed by love.
Am madly in love, bereft of reason.
