بانَتdeparted لُبَينىLubayna فَهاجَand stirred القَلبُthe heart مَنthe one who باناdeparted
وَكانَand was ماwhat وَعَدَتshe promised مَطلاًdelay وَليّاناand evasion
Lubayna departed, and the one who left stirred the heart.
And what she promised proved delay and evasion.
وَأَخلَفَتكَand failed you مُنىًhopes قَدindeed كُنتَyou were تَأمُلُهاyou hoped for them
فَأَصبَحَso became القَلبُthe heart بَعدَafter البَينِparting حَيراناbewildered
And hopes you had cherished have failed you,
so after parting the heart was left bewildered.
اللَهُGod يَدريknows وَماand not يَدريknows بِهِof it أَحَدٌanyone
ماذاwhat أَجَمجَمُI conceal مِنof ذِكراكِremembrance of you أَحياناsometimes
God knows—and no one else knows it—
what I sometimes keep hidden as I remember you.
ياO أَكمَلَmost perfect الناسِof people مِنfrom قَرنٍthe crown of the head إِلىto قَدَمٍa foot
وَأَحسَنَand fairest الناسِof people ذاwearing ثَوبٍa garment وَعُرياناand naked
O most perfect of people, from crown to foot,
and fairest of people, clothed or naked.
نِعمَexcellent is الضَجيعُthe bedfellow بُعَيدَshortly after النومُsleep تَجلُبُهُyou draw him
إِلَيكَto you مُمتَلِئًfull نَوماًof sleep وَيَقظاناand awake
How fine is the bedfellow whom, soon after sleep, you draw
to your side, whether heavy with slumber or awake!
لاnot بارَكَbless اللَهُGod فيمَنupon whoever كانَwas يَحسَبُكُمhe considered you
إِلّاexcept عَلىupon العَهدِthe pledge حَتّىuntil كانَhappened ماwhat كاناhappened
May God not bless the one who believed you
to be nothing but faithful to your pledge, until what happened happened.
حَتّىuntil اِستَفَقتُI came to my senses أَخيراًfinally بَعدَماafter نُكِحَتshe was married
كَأَنَّماas though كانَhad been ذاكَthat القَلبُthe heart حَيراناbewildered
Until I finally came to my senses, after she was wed,
as though that heart had been bewildered.
قَدindeed زارَنيvisited me طَيفَكُمyour phantom لَيلاًby night فَأَرَّقَنيand kept me awake
فَبُتُّso I spent the night لِلشَوقِbecause of longing أُذريI shed الدَمعَtears تَهتاناin torrents
Your phantom visited me by night and kept me awake,
so I spent the night in longing, shedding tears in torrents.
إِنif تَصرِمِyou sever الحَبلَthe cord أَوor تُمسيyou become at evening مُفارِقَةًparted
فَالدَهرُthen time يُحدِثُbrings about لِلإِنسانِfor a person أَلواناcolors
If you sever the cord or are parted come evening,
then time brings a person changes of many hues.
وَماand not أَرىI see مِثلَكُمlike you فيamong الناسِpeople مِنany بَشَرٍhuman being
فَقَدfor indeed رَأَيتُI have seen بِهِin it حَيّاًclansfolk وَنِسواناand women
And I see no human being among people like you,
for I have seen clansfolk and women there.
