مَقالَةُthe words of واشٍa slanderer أَوor وَعيدُa threat from أَميرِa ruler
Even if they seclude her, and union with her is barred by
A slanderer's words or a ruler's threat,
فَلَمyet not يَمنَعواthey prevented عَينَيَّmy two eyes مِنfrom دائِمِconstant البُكاweeping
وَلَنand will not يُذهِبواthey drive away ماwhat قَدalready أَجَنَّhas hidden ضَميريmy inmost heart
They have not kept my eyes from ceaseless weeping,
Nor will they banish what my heart has hidden.
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكواI complain ماwhat أُلاقيI suffer مِنَfrom الهَوىlove
وَمِنand of حُرَقٍburning pangs تَعتادُنيthat revisit me وَزَفيرِand deep sighing
To God I complain of what I suffer from love,
And of burning pangs that revisit me, and deep sighs,
وَمِنand of حَرَقٍburning لِلحُبِّof love فيin باطِنِthe depths of الحَشاthe breast
وَلَيلٍand a night تَويلِlong in الحُزنِsorrow غَيرِnot قَصيرِbrief
And of love's burning in my inmost breast,
And a night long in sorrow, not brief.
سَأَبكيI shall weep عَلىfor نَفسيmyself بِعَينٍwith an eye غَزيرَةٍoverflowing with tears
بُكاءَthe weeping of حَزينٍa grieving one فيin الوِثاقِbonds أَسيرِa captive
I shall weep for myself with an eye overflowing with tears,
As a grieving captive weeps in bonds.
وَكُنّاand we were جَميعاًtogether قَبلَbefore أَنthat يَظهَرَbecomes known الهَوىlove
بِأَنعَمِin the most pleasant حالِstate of غَبطَةٍcontentment وَسُرورِand joy
And we were together, before love became known,
In the happiest state of contentment and joy.
فَماyet not بَرِحَceased الواشونَthe slanderers حَتّىuntil بَدَتbecame visible لَهُمto them
بُطونُthe inward parts of الهَوىlove مَقلوبَةًturned over لِظُهورِinto outward sides
Yet the slanderers never ceased until they saw
Love's inward parts turned outward.
لَقَدindeed كُنتِyou were هَسبَenough for النَفسِthe soul لَودامَif ... had lasted وَصلُناour union
وَلَكِنَّماbut الدُنياthis world مَتاعُan enjoyment of غُرورِdelusion
You would indeed have been enough for my soul, had our union lasted;
But this world is only a deceptive pleasure.
