عَفاhas become deserted سَرِفٌSarif مِنof أَهلِهِits people فَسُراوِعُand Surawiʿ
فَجَنباand both sides of أَريكٍArik فَالتِلاعُand the gullies الدَوافِعُbearing torrents
Sarif lies deserted of its people, and Surawiʿ too,
and both sides of Arik, and the torrent-bearing gullies,
فَغَيقَةُand Ghayqah فَالأَخيافُand al-Akhyaf أَخيافُthe foothills of ظَبيَةٍZabyah
بِهاin them مِنof لُبَينىLubayna مَخرَفٌan autumn camp وَمَرابِعُand spring encampments
and Ghayqah, and al-Akhyaf—the foothills of Zabyah—
where Lubayna had an autumn camp and spring encampments.
لَعَلَّperhaps لُبَينىLubayna أَنthat يُحَمَّmay be decreed لِقائُهاa meeting with her
بِبَعضِin some of البِلادِthe lands إِنَّindeed ماwhatever حُمَّhas been decreed واقِعُwill happen
Perhaps a meeting with Lubayna will be decreed
in some land—for whatever is decreed must come to pass—
بِجَزعٍat a bend مِنَof الواديthe valley خَلاbecame empty عَنof أَنيسِهِits familiar company
عَفاhas faded وَتَخَطَّتهُand passed it by العُيونُthe eyes الخَوادِعُdeceptive
at a bend in the valley, deserted by its people,
effaced, and passed over by those deceptive eyes.
وَلَمّاand when بَداbecame apparent مِنهاfrom her الفُراقُparting كَماjust as بَداappeared
بِظَهرِon the face of السَفاthe rock (uncertain reading) الصَلدِhard الشُقوقِthe cracks الشَوائِعُspreading
And when parting from her became clear, as did
the spreading cracks on the face of solid rock,
تَمَنَّيتَyou wished أَنto تَلقىmeet لُبَيناكَyour Lubayna وَالمُنىand wishes
تُعاصيكَdefy you أَحياناsometimes وَحيناand at times تُطاوِعُcomply
you wished to meet your Lubayna; and wishes
sometimes defy you, and sometimes comply.
وَماand there is no مِنany حَبيبٍlover وامِقٍdevoted لِحَبيبِهُto his beloved
وَلاnor ذيone possessing هَوىpassionate love إِلّاexcept لَهُfor him الدَهرُTime فاجِعُa bringer of grief
There is no lover devoted to his beloved,
nor anyone in love, whom Time will not bereave.
وَطارَand flew غُرابُthe crow of البَينِparting وَاِنشَقَّتِand split apart العَصاthe staff
بِبَينٍthrough separation كَماjust as شَقَّsplit الأَديمَthe hide الصَوانِعُthe craftswomen
The crow of parting flew, and the staff split apart
through separation, as craftswomen split a hide.
أَلاAh! ياO غُرابَcrow of البَينِparting قَدindeed طِرتَyou have flown بِالَّذيwith what
أُحاذِرُI dread مِنfrom لُبنىLubna فَهَلso will ...? أَنتَyou واقِعُalight
Ah, crow of parting, you have flown bearing what
I dread from Lubna—will you now alight?
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you لَوif أَبلَغتُهاI conveyed to her قيلَكَyour words اِسلِميfare well!
طَوَتshe concealed هَزَناًgrief (uncertain reading) وَاِرفَضَّand poured forth مِنهاfrom her المَدامِعُthe tears
Indeed, were I to convey to her your words, 'Fare well,'
she would conceal her grief, and tears would stream from her.
تُبَكّيyou lament عَلىover لُبنىLubna وَأَنتَwhile you تَرَكتَهاleft her
وَكُنتَand you were كَآتٍlike one approaching غَيَّهُhis own ruin وَهوَwhile he is طائِعُwilling
You lament Lubna, though you yourself left her,
and were like one who willingly walks into his own ruin.
فَلاso do not تَبكِيَنweep فيin إِثرِthe wake of شَيءٍa thing نَدامَةًin regret
إِذاwhen نَزَعَتهُhave wrested it away مِنfrom يَدَيكَyour two hands النَوازِعُthe snatchers
So do not weep in regret over anything
when the snatchers have wrested it from your hands.
فَلَيسَfor there is no لِأَمرٍfor a matter حاوَلَhas sought اللَهُGod جَمعَهُto unite it
مُشِتُّa scatterer وَلاnor ماwhat فَرَّقَhas scattered اللَهُGod جامِعُa gatherer
For what God has sought to unite, there is
none to scatter it; nor can anyone unite what God has scattered.
طَمِعتَyou hoped بِلَيلىfor Layla أَنthat تَريعَshe would return وَإِنَّماyet it is only
تُقَطِّعُsever أَعناقَthe necks of الرِجالِmen المَطامِعُlongings
You hoped that Layla would return, yet it is only
longings that sever the necks of men.
