وَخَبَّرتُمانيand you two told me أَنَّthat تَيماءَTayma مَنزِلٌa dwelling
لِلَيلىfor Layla إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الصَيفُsummer أَلقىcasts المَراسِياthe anchors
And you two told me that Tayma is a dwelling
for Layla when summer casts its anchors.
فَهَذيso these شُهورُmonths الصَيفِof summer عَنّاaway from us قَدِalready اِنقَضَتhave passed
فَماso why لِلنَوىwith separation تَرميit flings بَليليwith Layla المَرامِياthe distant reaches
So these months of summer have already passed us by;
why, then, does separation fling Layla far away?
أَعُدُّI count اللَياليthe nights وَالشُهورُand the months وَلاand not أَرىI see
غَراميmy passion بِكُمfor you (plural) يَزدادُincreases إِلّاexcept تَمادِياpersistence
I count the nights and the months, yet I find
my passion for you growing only more persistent.
فَياso O جَبَلَيtwo mountains of نَعمانَNa'man إِنif آنَis at hand بُعدُهُمtheir departure
فَإِنّيthen indeed I سَأَكسوكَI shall clothe you دُموعَtears الجَوارِياthe flowing ones
O two mountains of Na'man, if their departure is at hand,
then I shall clothe you in flowing tears.
فَلَوfor if كانَwere واشٍa talebearer بِاليَمامَةِin al-Yamama دارُهُhis home
وَداريand my home بِأَعلىin the upper reaches of حَضرَمَوتَHadramawt اِهتَدىhe would find his way لِياto me
For if a talebearer's home were in al-Yamama,
and mine in upper Hadramawt, he would find his way to me.
