بِهاwith her كَلَفاًinfatuation مَنone who كانَused to عِنديin my presence يَعيبُهاfind fault with her
Her nearness gladdens my eye, and I am made
more enamored of her by one who used to fault her in my presence.
وَكَمand many a قائِلٍspeaker قَدindeed قالَsaid تُبrepent فَعَصَيتُهُbut I disobeyed him
وَتِلكَand that لَعَمريby my life تَوبَةٌa repentance لاnot أَتوبُهاI make that repentance
And many a speaker has said, “Repent!”—but I disobeyed him.
And that, by my life, is a repentance I will not undertake.
فَياso, O نَفسُsoul صَبراًbe patient لَستِyou are not وَاللَهِby God فَاِعلَميso know
بِأَوَّلِthe first نَفسٍsoul غابَwent away عَنهاfrom her حَبيبُهاher beloved
So, my soul, be patient! By God, know that you are not
the first soul whose beloved has gone away from her.
