    وَإِن تَلقَها فَالقَلبُ راضٍ وَقانِعُ

    As though you had never dwelt there, when you did not meet her;

And if you meet her, the heart is pleased and content.

So tell me, heart: when separation carries off

Lubna, and she turns away from you, what will you do?

Will you bear a parting that sunders, along with love's anguish,

Or are you a man who forgets shame and so gives way to grief?

For if Lubayna departs, I will not sleep,

When the beds bear up the sleepers.

And how can a man sleep, wearing love's anguish next to his skin,

A bedfellow of sorrow, with daunting relapses within him?

So there is no good in this world if we are not favored

By Lubayna, and no one gathers us together.

Is Lubayna not beneath a roof that shelters her

And me? This comforts me, even if she is far away.

And the pitch-dark night clothes us when it grows dark,

And we see the morning's light while dawn shines bright.

She treads a carpet beneath her feet, and part of it

I tread with my foot; no one can fold it away.

And I rejoice if she is well at evening; but should

A ravaging calamity befall her, terrors frighten me.

As though you were the first of your kind, never having seen people before her,

And Time had never visited you among those it visits.

For I used to weep while separation lay quiet

With us and with you, knowing what parting would do.

And I shun you as one shuns the hated, though love for you

Leaves wounds upon my liver that tear it apart.

So alas for my liver, from the fierceness of longing and sorrow!

And alas for my liver! Indeed, I am returning to God.

And I am quick to fret, until it wastes me away,

Fearing the dwelling's remoteness, though we are still together.

And I make for the land that lies beyond you,

So that those returning may one day bring me back to you.
