وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمُفنٍsurely exhausting دَمعَthe tears of عَينِيَmy eye بِالبُكاwith weeping
حِذارَfor fear of الَّذيthat which قَدalready كانَhas happened أَوor هُوَit كائِنُis to come
And indeed I am exhausting my eye's tears with weeping,
I am skilled at weeping, my eyes pouring forth tears
For fear of what has already happened or is yet to come.
Beware of what has been or what is yet to come
وَقالواand they said غَداًtomorrow أَوor بَعدَafter ذاكَthat بِلَيلَةٍby one night
فِراقُparting from حَبيبٍa beloved لَمhas not يَبِنdeparted وَهوَwhile he بائِنُis departing
And they said: “Tomorrow, or one night after that,
And they said tomorrow or after that night
Comes parting from a beloved not yet gone, yet bound to go.”
Parting with a beloved who did not bid farewell though he is gone
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَخشىfearing أَنthat تَكونَwould be مَنيَّتيmy death
بِكَفَّيكِat your two hands إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat ماwhat حانَhas reached its fatal hour حائِنُis doomed
And I had not feared that my death would be
And I had no fear that my death would be
At your hands—yet what has reached its fatal hour is doomed.
By your hands except that what is destined comes to pass
