Lubayna has departed, so today you are love-stricken.

And today, once sound in judgment, you are indeed deranged.

So today Lubna is far away from you.

    And Lubna's coy charm—may blessings be hers—is honey-sweet.

Will separation from Lubna be reversed at last,

as in the nights you knew, when love was welcomed?

And indeed, I once saw myself truly content with Lubna,

and we were together, and the cord was unbroken.

So, from loving Lubna, whenever I recall her, I am left

with my heart held captive and my mind impaired.

Through love of Lubna—rather, through remembering her—you have fallen

into anguish; so today my heart is preoccupied.

    يَبريهِ طولُ سَقامٍ فَهوَ مَنحولُ

    And my body is worn out by separation from her;

prolonged sickness wears it away, so it is emaciated.

On the day she turned away without speaking to me, I was like

a man mad with love, stricken at heart, consumptive.

I entrust Lubna to God as she parts from me,

unwillingly, while the old man's command is carried out.
