Whatever I may forget, I will not forget her words,

as her tears scattered the contents of the kohl-cases:

"Enjoy this short day, for it

is hostage to the days of the long months."

She appeared, with curtains of the house screening her,

to us, as the watcher's attention lapsed,

with the eyes of an oryx, tears flowing down from them

in two variegated strands of tears and antimony kohl.

"Take provision for parting; I am departing—

the sustenance of a hope that will help you; and God brings things about."

Then she shed two strings of pearls mingled with antimony kohl

upon her cheek, except what her fingers held back.
