لاdo not تَعذِلينِيَreproach me سَلمىSalma اليَومَtoday وَاِنتَظِريand wait
لا تَعذِلينِيَ سَلمى اليَومَ وَاِنتَظِري
أَنfor يَجمَعَto reunite اللَهُGod شَملاًa company طالَماfor so long اِفتَرَقاit was divided
أَن يَجمَعَ اللَهُ شَملاً طالَما اِفتَرَقا
Do not reproach me today, Salma, and wait
Do not blame me, Salma, today and wait
for God to reunite a company long divided.
For God to reunite what has long been separated
إِنif شَتَّتَscattered الدَهرُtime شَملاًa company بَينَamong جيرَتِكُمyour neighbors
إِن شَتَّتَ الدَهرُ شَملاً بَينَ جيرَتِكُم
فَطالَyet it lasted long فيin نِعمَةٍbliss ياO سَلمُSalm (Salma) ماwhile اِتَفَقاit was united
فَطالَ في نِعمَةٍ يا سَلمُ ما اِتَفَقا
If time has scattered the company among your neighbors,
If time has separated a bond between your neighbors
yet long was its union in bliss, O Salm.
Then it has been too long in prosperity, oh Salma, since they agreed
وَقَدand indeed حَلَلناwe have lodged بِقَسرِيًّwith a Qasri أَخيa man of ثِقَةٍtrustworthiness
وَقَد حَلَلنا بِقَسرِيًّ أَخي ثِقَةٍ
كَالبَدرِlike the full moon يَجلوilluminates دُجىthe gloom الظَلماءِthe dark night وَالأُفُقاand the horizon
كَالبَدرِ يَجلو دُجى الظَلماءِ وَالأُفُقا
And we have lodged with a trustworthy Qasri,
And we have settled with my brother of trust
like the full moon, dispelling the night's gloom and lighting the horizon.
Like the full moon dispelling the darkness of night and horizon
لايُجبَرُcannot mend الناسُpeople شَيئاًanything هاضَهُhe shattered it أَسَدٌAsad
لايُجبَرُ الناسُ شَيئاً هاضَهُ أَسَدٌ
يَوماًon any day وَلاnor يَرتَقونَthey stitch up الدَهرَever ماwhat فَتَقاhe tore apart
يَوماً وَلا يَرتَقونَ الدَهرَ ما فَتَقا
People cannot mend anything Asad has shattered
People cannot mend what a roaring lion has torn
on any day, nor ever stitch up what he has torn apart.
One day, nor can they climb time however it splits
كَمhow much مِنof ثَناءٍpraise عَظيمٍgreat قَدindeed تَدارَكَهُhe secured it
كَم مِن ثَناءٍ عَظيمٍ قَد تَدارَكَهُ
وَقَدwhen already تَفاقَمَhad grown grave فيهِin it الأَمرُthe affair وَاِنخَرَقاand had fallen apart
وَقَد تَفاقَمَ فيهِ الأَمرُ وَاِنخَرَقا
How much great praise he has won,
How much great praise it has accumulated
when the affair there had grown grave and fallen apart.
And in it the matter has worsened and torn apart
