سَقىmay water اللَهُGod أَطلالاًruins بَنُعمٍat Nuʿm تَرادَفَتfollowed one another

May God water the ruins at Nuʿm, where, one after another,
separations came, until they settled at al-Matali.
فَإِنso if كانَتِwere الأَيّامُthe days ياO أُمَّmother of مالِكٍMalik
تُسَلّيكُمُmake you forget عَنّيabout me وَتُرضيand please الأَعادِياthe enemies
If the days, O Umm Malik,
make you forget me and please my enemies,
فَلاthen let not يَأمَنَنever feel safe بَعديafter me اِمرِؤٌa man فَجعَthe loss of لَذَّةٍa pleasure
مِنَof العَيشِlife أَوor فَجعَdeprivation by الخُطوبِthe calamities العَوافِياwell-being
then let no man after me feel safe from losing a pleasure
of life, or from calamities robbing him of well-being.
وَبُدِّلَتand were substituted مِنin place of جَدواكِyour favor ياO أُمَّmother of مالِكٍMalik
طَوارِقُnight visitors of هَمٍّsorrow يَحتَضِرنَbeset وَسادِياmy pillow
And in place of your favor, O Umm Malik, came
night-visiting sorrows that beset my pillow.
وَأَصبَحتُand I became بَعدَafter الأُنسِcompanionship لابِسَwearing جُبَّةٍa tunic
أُساقيI exchange draughts with الكُماةَthe champions الدارِعينَthe mail-clad العَوالِياthe long spears
And after companionship, I came to wear a tunic,
trading draughts of long spears with mail-clad champions.
فَيَومايَso my two days يَومٌa day فيin الحَديدِiron مُسَربَلاclad
وَيَومٌand a day مَعَwith البيضِfair-skinned women الأَوانِسِcompanionable maidens لاهِياat play
So my days are two: a day when I am clad in iron,
and a day at play with fair, companionable maidens.
فَلاso neither مُدرِكاًattaining حَظّاًa share لَدىwith أُمِّmother of مالِكٍMalik
وَلاnor مُستَريحاًat rest فيin الحَياةِlife فَقاضِياand thus dying
So I neither win a share with Umm Malik,
nor find relief in life by meeting my end.
خَليلَيَّO my two friends إَنif دارَتturned عَلىagainst أُمِّmother of مالِكٍMalik
صُروفُthe vicissitudes of اللَياليthe nights فَاِبعَثاthen send, you two لِيَfor me ناعِياa death-crier
My two friends, if upon Umm Malik fall
the vicissitudes of night, send a herald of death for me.
وَلاand do not تَترُكانيyou two leave me لاnot لِخَيرٍfor any good مُعَجَّلٍsoon to come
وَلاnor لِبَقاءٍfor prolonged life تَنظُرانِyou two await بَقائِياmy survival
And do not leave me—not for any good soon to come,
nor for prolonged life, awaiting my survival.
وَإِنَّand indeed اَلَّذيwhat أَمَّلتُI hoped for مِنfrom أُمِّmother of مالِكٍMalik
أَشابَmade gray قَذاليthe back of my head وَاِستَهامَand maddened with love فُؤادِياmy heart
And indeed, what I hoped for from Umm Malik
has grayed the back of my head and driven my heart love-mad.
فَلَيتَso would that المَناياthe fates of death صَبَّحَتنيvisited me at dawn غُدَيَّةًone morning
بِذَبحٍwith slaughter وَلَمand did not أَسمَعI hear لِبَينٍof parting مُنادِياa herald
Would that death had visited me at dawn one morning,
with slaughter, and I had never heard a herald of parting.
نَظَرتُI looked وَدونيand before me يَذبُلٌYadhbul وَعِمايَةٌand ʿImaya
إِلىtoward آلِthe people of نُعمٍNuʿm مَنظَراًa gaze مُتَنائِياfar-distant
I looked, with Yadhbul and ʿImaya before me,
toward Nuʿm's people, gazing from afar.
شَكَوتُI complained إِلىto الرَحمَنthe Merciful بُعدَthe remoteness of مَزارِهاvisiting her
وَماand what حَمَّلَتنيshe burdened me with وَاِنقِطاعَand the severing of رَجائِياmy hope
I complained to the Merciful of how far it was to visit her,
and what she had burdened me with, and the severing of my hope.
وَقُلتُand I said وَلَمand did not أَملِكI restrain myself أَعَمرُوdoes ʿAmr بنُson of عامِرٍʿAmir
لِحَتفٍfor a death بِذاتِat Dhat الرَقمَتَينِal-Raqmatayn يَرىhe sees لِياfor me
And I said, unable to restrain myself: 'Does ʿAmr ibn ʿAmir
see death awaiting me at Dhat al-Raqmatayn?'
وَقَدand already أَيقَنَتknew for certain نَفسيmy soul عَشِيَّةَon the evening فارَقواthey departed
بِأَسفَلَat the lower end of واديthe valley of الدَوحِal-Dawh أَنthat لاno تَلاقِياreunion
And my soul already knew for certain, the evening they departed,
at the lower end of Wadi al-Dawh, that there would be no reunion.
إِذاif ماever طَواكِfolds you away الدَهرُtime ياO أُمَّmother of مالِكٍMalik
فَشَأنُthen the affair of المَناياthe fates of death القاضِياتِthe life-ending ones وَشانِياand my affair
If ever time folds you away, O Umm Malik,
then let the life-ending fates have their way with me.
