من كربتين نجوتُ
Indeed, I came to my senses—I came to my senses!
From two torments I escaped:
من ليلة الحب عدتُ
ومن لظاها سلمت
from love’s night I returned,
and from its blaze emerged unharmed;
ومن تصاريف ليلٍ
بالداء يدجو نجوت
and from Layla’s vicissitudes,
as gloom deepened through illness, I escaped.
ما علتي ما جواها
ما السر في أن مرضت
What is my malady—what is its consuming inward fire?
What is the secret of my falling ill?
أكان ذاك لأني
بعهدكم قد وفيت
Was that because I
had kept faith with your covenant?
لا تسألوا بعد عني
إني عن العشق صمت
Ask no more about me;
indeed, I have fasted from passionate love.
