1. I have seen a mortal’s life, from one hour to the next:

    one hour grows sweet, another never wakes from sorrow.

  2. O Lord, if You graciously intend glory for me,

    let it lie in nearness to the one I love, and distance from the brother of blame.

  3. And if there is pain for me in what You have decreed,

    then grief for those far away has been my consolation from of old.

  4. And if one day You will me the grace of dwelling near You,

    then let me be a martyr to love—not wasted by care or sickness.

  5. And prolong my reckoning at the Resurrection on account of love,

    for lingering over tales of yearning is among my deepest concerns.
