    Disasters, whose consequences are disasters

  2. رأيتُ النيل في هوج مخيف

    تراع به المشاعر والقلوب

    I saw the Nile in a terrifying frenzy

    In which feelings and hearts are startled

  3. هديرٌ مزعج الصرخات ماض

    إلى ما لا يرام ولا يطيب

    An annoying din, the shouts have passed

    To what is not desirable or good

  4. يبيت الناس في جزع وخوف

    سهارى ما تقر لهم جنوب

    People spend the night in anxiety and fear

    Awake, their eyelids find no rest

  5. إذا سمعوا بوهم الوهم صوتا

    تحيّر في قلوبهم الوجيب

    If they hear the whisper of illusion, a sound

    Perplexity stirs in their hearts

  6. فيا حابي أجبني أنت حابي

    وأنت اليوم يا حابي شعوب

    So answer me, you who love me, you who love me

    And you, my love, are people today

  7. غدوت اليوم يا نهراً حبيباً

    وما لك في مدائنا حبيب

    You have become today, oh beloved river

    Yet what place do you have in our cities, beloved?

  8. يقول القائلون ولستُ منهم

    بأنك فاتك الأنياب ذيب

    They say, and I'm not one of them

    That you have lost your fangs, melted

  9. تصول ولست في حاج لزاد

    لئيم الطبع ليس له قريب

    You rage though you need no provision

    Evil natured, with no kin

  10. إلهاً كنت يا حابي قديماً

    عظيم القدر ليس له ضريب

    You were, oh my love, once a god

    Great in power, matchless

  11. إلها ينثر الخيرات نثراً

    تطيب به الفواكه والحبوب

    A god who scattered bounties generously

    By which fruits and crops thrive

  12. فراعن جاهلون رأوك ربا

    كريما لا يثاب وقد يثيب

    Ignorant pharaohs saw you as a Lord

    Generous, who rewards and also penalizes

  13. لقد كذبوا على الأقدار جهلا

    ألا إن الجهول هو الكذوب

    They have indeed lied about fate in ignorance

    Lo, the ignorant one is the liar

  14. ومن فرعون ما جدوى ثناه

    على نهر محاسنه عيوب

    And of what use is the praise of a pharaoh

    For a river whose flaws are many?

  15. يشح إذا رنا الوادي إليه

    ويخنس لا يصيخ ولا يجيب

    He withholds when the valley appeals to him

    Withdraws, shouts not, nor answers

  16. وحين يرى غنانا عن نداه

    تضيق به الشوارع والدروب

    And when he sees our singing unworthy of his ear

    Streets and paths narrow around him

  17. أنهرٌ أنت أم خودٌ كعاب

    وقاح الدل كاذبةٌ لعوب

    Are you a river or a stubborn mule

    Impudent, lying, playful?

  18. لمن هذي الصواريخ المواضى

    بصدر الجو مرماها عزيب

    For whom are these fiery arrows?

    Aimed by fate at the sky's chest

  19. ولاة الأمر منطقهم عجيب

    وهل في مصر يا قومي عجيب

    The rulers' logic is strange

    And is there, my people, anything strange in Egypt?

  20. أنهرٌ يأكل الخيرات أكلا

    يقوم لمدحه ليلا خطيب

    A river that voraciously consumes bounties

    At whose praise a preacher rises at night

  21. وقاضي الشرع يحضر في يديه

    كتاب خطّه خطّ غريب

    The judge of religious law attends with a book in his hands

    Its script, a strange script

  22. يرتل حجة لم يبق منها

    سوى سطرين من قدم تذوب

    He recites a proof, of which nothing remains

    Except two crumbling lines

  23. خرافات سخيفات وعهد

    من الأوهام مرتعه خصيب

    Absurd, silly myths and a covenant

    From illusions, its pasture fertile

  24. بهذا العام يسقط كل حق

    يقال له الخراج أو الضريب

    This year, every right falls

    Called tax or tribute

  25. طغى فالفلك تعثر في خطاها

    وتمضى لا تعود ولا تؤوب

    It has transgressed, so the planets stumble in their orbit

    And proceed, neither to return nor make amends

  26. وكانت قبل هذا اليوم فلكا

    تجوب من الغوارب ما تجوب

    Before this day they were planets

    Roaming what they roam of seas

  27. بكى عبد القوي غلت دموع

    يجود بمثلها رجل أديب

    Abdel Qawi wept, his tears overflowed

    The tears an erudite man sheds in generosity

  28. مهندس مصر مكروبٌ حزين

    تراجعه الحديث فلا يجيب

    Egypt's grieving, sorrowful engineer

    Whose talk falters, so he does not answer

  29. أسيت له يطوف بكل أرض

    وفي ساقيه من تعب ندوب

    I wished him as he roams every land

    With scars of fatigue on his legs

  30. تطيب له الخيام يبيت فيها

    مبيتاً لا يريح ولا يطيب

    Tents are pleasant for him, he sleeps in them

    A sleep that gives no rest or pleasure

  31. طغى النهران في عام وفاضا

    جيب يستجيب له حبيب

    The two rivers have overflowed in a year and flooded

    A pocket that responds to a lover

  32. تراءت دجلة تطغى وتسعى

    كما يسعى إلى الموت الطبيب

    The Tigris appeared, overflowing and hastening

    As a doctor hastens towards death

  33. فثار النيل يسأل ما شجاها

    وما عين لأدمعها تثوب

    So the Nile rose, asking what distressed it

    And for its tears, what eye makes amends?

  34. عراقيون في دارات ليلى

    لهممن لطف أنفسهم ذنوب

    Iraqis in the land of Layla

    Whose souls have from kindness, sins

  35. وحسن الحسن في زمن المآسي

    جمال نوره نور معيب

    And beauty in the time of tragedy

    Its radiant light, a flawed light

  36. بنهر النيل تدهمنا الخطوب

    وتشتجر الخفايا والغيوب

    With the Nile disasters befall us

    And mysteries and unseen things kindle

  37. حريق في ضمير الماء يذكو

    كما يذكو بأدمعنا اللهيب

    A fire smolders in the water's conscience

    As our tears make the blaze roar

  38. حرائقُ من أمانات لطاف

    وفي الكافور إن يحرق طيوب

    Fires from gentle trusts

    And ambergris, if it burns, perfumes

  39. غرائق نحن لا أهلا وسهلا

    بعهد كل جدواه لؤوب

    We are drowning, neither welcome nor at ease

    With a pact, all of whose cord is rotten

  40. أفض يا نيل واسترفد صباحا

    يؤمل حظه ذاك الغروب

    Overflow, oh Nile, and flood in the morning

    He who hopes for its fortune, the sunset

  41. أفض أغرق مزارعنا جميعا

    فقد أعيت وأضناها اللغوب

    Overflow, drown all our farms

    For you have exhausted them and made them obsolete

  42. ودع ما في بلادك من مآس

    بهن الطفل من جزع يشيب

    Leave the distress in your lands

    At which an infant grows old from anguish

  43. خلائق ضاحكون مع الليالي

    ولو عقلوا لهدّهم النحيب

    Laughing people with the nights

    If they had sense, their weeping would stab them

  44. يغنّى الراد في مسي وصبح

    غناء ذاك أم هذا نعيب

    The reciter sings in my evening and dawn

    Is that singing or this, we criticize?

  45. وصام الناس من جوع وصاموا

    صيام الذئب تحبسه اللصوب

    The people have fasted from hunger and fasted

    The wolf’s fast, restrained by traps

  46. نناديهم فلا نلقى جوابا

    نداء الحر ليس له مجيب

    We call them yet get no answer

    A free man’s call has no respondent

  47. ثعالب في سياسيتهم موات

    وموت الثعلبان له ضروب

    Foxes in their shrewdness, lethal

    And the foxes’ death has kinds

  48. تجلّى بعضهم أو جلنزوه

    فأمسى وهو من جهل طروب

    Some fancied themselves or put on airs

    And ended as fools full of vanity

  49. إذا فرحوا بنوم الدهر عنهم

    فيوم ذهابهم يومٌ قريب

    When they rejoice at the days’ sleep about them

    The day of their passing is near at hand

  50. صباحُ العيد صبح غد سلامٌ

    على عيد تصوم به القلوب

    The dawn of celebration, the dawn of tomorrow is

    Peace for a feast at which hearts fast

  51. هو الطوفان يرمى الناس رمياً

    فلا نومٌ هناك ولا هبوب

    It is the flood casting people far

    No sleep there, nor breezes blow

  52. سلوا نوحا إذا شئتم سلوه

    يجبكم ذلك الرجل الأريب

    Ask Noah, if you will – ask him

    That strange man will make you weep

  53. سفينته سفينتكم وأنتم

    من الأمواج دمعكمو صبيب

    His ark is your ark, and you

    Are from the waves, your tear and lament

  54. تعالى النيل من ملك رحيم

    غدا وشعاره الملك الغضوب

    The Nile has come from a merciful king

    And tomorrow its banner will be wrathful

  55. أقمتب أرض مصر أروض قلبي

    على عيش هو الروض الجديب

    I inhabited Egypt to tame my heart

    To a life that is barren plain

  56. أعيش بأرض مصر لأن داري

    بها يا رب ما هذى الكروب

    I live in Egypt’s land because my house

    Is there, O Lord, not this misery

  57. أفض يا نيل أغرقهم جميعاً

    فما لي في ربوعهمو حبيب

    Overflow, O Nile, drown them all

    For I have no beloved in their meadows

  58. وثبتُ عليهمو بالشعر إني

    إذا ما شئت يرطبني الوثوب

    I will prove against them in verse, that I

    When I wish, will be clad in armor
