شربت في الحب كأسا

يا ليتكم قد شربتم

In love I drank a cup—

If only you had drunk.

لو ذقتم الصفو منها

لما سهرت ونمتم

Had you tasted its pure sweetness,

I would not have stayed awake while you slept.

متاعبي في حياتي

وكربتي هي أنتم

My troubles in life

And my anguish are you.

هذا جمال غريب

رأيته هل رأيتم

This is a wondrous beauty;

I have seen it—have you?

سلوا السجنجل عنه

لتعرفوا ماجهلتم

Ask the mirror about it,

So you may learn what you did not know:

جدائل من شذور

من نورها قد خلقتم

Tresses of golden fragments,

From whose light you were created;

وباقة من زهور

من عطرها قد غفوتم

And a bouquet of flowers,

By whose perfume you fell asleep;

وأعين من فتون

لو شفتموها فتنتم

And eyes filled with enchantment—

Had you seen them, you would have been enthralled;

أنامل شائقات

بحسنها قد سموتم

Alluring fingers,

Through whose beauty you rose sublime;

ومعصم من رحيق

لو بستموه سكرتم

And a wrist made of nectar—

Had you kissed it, you would have grown drunk;

وناهدات كعاب

تهديكمو إن ضللتم

And full-breasted maidens in their prime,

To guide you whenever you stray,

كأنهن سهام

تغزوكمو إن رقدتم

As though they were arrows

That assail you while you sleep.

يا هاجرين تعالوا

إن السعادة أنتم

O deserters, come back:

You are happiness itself.

وهبت روحي إليكم

ولم أشف ما وهبتم

I gave my soul to you,

Yet have not recovered from what you gave.

ناجيتكم فسكتم

سكت عنكم فقلتم

I spoke to you in confidence, and you kept silent;

I kept silent about you, and then you spoke.

لا تسرفوا في عذابي

يا عاذلين ظلمتم

Do not go too far in tormenting me;

O reproachers, you have wronged me.

من حسنكم قد برئنا

هل من غرامي برئتم

We have recovered from your beauty—

But have you recovered from my love?

وعن لقائي صبرتم

وعن لقائي صبرتم

You patiently stayed away from meeting me,

Yet at meeting me you rejoiced.

هذا سؤالي إليكم

لقد عدلت فجرتم

This is my question to you:

I dealt justly, but you transgressed.

الظلم معنى قبيح

يسوءكم إن سألتم

Injustice is an ugly thing;

It will displease you if you are questioned.

فلا تردون شابا

يشوككم إن سلبتم

So do not turn away a young man

Who, if robbed, will prick you like a thorn.

ما أمركم أخبروني

في الحب تهت وتهتم

What is the matter with you? Tell me.

In love I lost my way—and so did you.

أحبكم إن وفيتم

أحبكم إن غدرتم

I love you if you remain faithful;

I love you if you betray me.

يا غادرين تعالوا

لعذركم قد وفيتم

O betrayers, come back;

You have been faithful to your excuse.

الغدر منكم جميل

والخير فيما صنعتم

Treachery from you is beautiful,

And goodness lies in what you have done.

لا تسألوا بعد عني

يا جاهلين علمتم

Ask no more about me;

O you who did not know—now you know.

يحنو فؤادي عليكم

وإن غضبتم فبنتم

My heart yearns tenderly toward you,

Even when you grew angry and departed.

الشعر والسحر عندي

وما أراكم شعرتم

Poetry and magic are mine,

Yet I do not think you have perceived them.

ليلى تراوض قلبي

لو شفتموها جننتم

Layla woos my heart;

Had you seen her, you would have gone mad.

مجنون ليلى غريم

يصحو لكم إن أفقتم

Majnun of Layla is my rival;

He will come to his senses for you, if you come to yours.

ويقطع الدهر وثبا

لأنكم قد تعبتم

Through time he bounds in mighty leaps

Because you have grown weary.

وفي إلى الروح روحي

لأنكم قد غدرتم

Faithful to the soul is my soul,

Because you have proved treacherous.

أظنكم قد ظلمتم

أظنكم قد عدلتم

I think that you have wronged me;

I think that you have acted justly.

في حي شبرا سكنتم

وما أراكم سكنتم

In Shubra’s quarter you made your dwelling,

Yet I do not think you found repose.

أضاق عنكم فؤادي

أضاق عنكم فطرتم

Was my heart too narrow for you?

Was it so narrow that you flew away?

لهائب من شجون

من نارها قد نجوتم

There are flames of sorrow

From whose fire you have escaped.

يا هاجرين أطيلوا

في هجركم إن أطقتم

O deserters, prolong

Your desertion, if you can bear it.

يا عاذلين أفيقوا

من عزلكم ما استطعتم

O reproachers, come to your senses;

Abandon as much of your reproach as you can.

الحب نار ونور

إن تقربوه أحترقتم

Love is fire and light:

Draw near it, and you will burn.

لا تسألوا كيف حالي

سلوتكم فسلوتم

Do not ask what state I am in;

I put you from mind, and you did the same.

إن ثار شوقي إليكم

يوما صحوتم فثرتم

If my longing for you should flare,

One day you will awaken and rise.

لن يصفح الحب عنكم

يا عاذلين ظلمتم

Love will not pardon you,

O reproachers—you have wronged me.

ديوان شعري عزيز

لسحره قد سجدتم

My poetry is a treasured divan;

Before its magic you have bowed.

ألحان روح أمير

يشدو بكم إن شدوتم

Melodies from a prince’s soul

Sing of you, if you sing.

تبنا ولكن قلبي

يزوركم لو عطفتم

We have repented—but my heart

Will visit you, if you show it kindness.

عندي من الحب كأس

أديرها لو أردتم

I have a cup of love

To pass around, if you wish.

وأستقيها بروح

إذا تسامى ركعتم

And I give it my spirit to drink;

When it rises sublime, you bow.

كتمت ما أشتهيه

وما أراكم كتمتم

I have concealed what I desire,

But I do not think you concealed it.
