You forgot the pledge and found repose,

free of the anguish of a faithful lover who kept it.

فليت ما راضكم فنمتم

أراح بعد النوى جفوني

If only what soothed you and let you sleep

had given my eyelids rest after separation.

وليتني إذ يئست منكم

كبحت في غربتي شجوني

If only, when I despaired of you,

I had curbed my sorrows in my estrangement.

ولّى خداع المنى وقّرت

مطامح الواجد الحزين

The deceit of wishes has passed; stilled now are

the aspirations of the sorrowing, ardent lover.

فما بكائي على حبيب

لم تقض في حبه ديوني

What use is my weeping for a beloved?

It has not paid the debts I owe to loving him.

ألقيتُ بالنفس من هواه

في لجة السحر والفتون

For love of him, I cast my soul

into the deep sea of enchantment and allure.

وقلت أرتادُ من صباهُ

ملاعب الطيش والجنون

And I said: From his youth I shall seek

the playgrounds of recklessness and madness.

فما تذوقت من جناه

إلا صدى النوح والأنين

Yet of its harvest I tasted

nothing but the echo of wailing and moaning.

يا روعة البدر في سماه

وفتنة الزهر في الغصون

O splendor of the full moon in its sky,

and enchantment of blossoms upon the boughs,

تناس ما شئت سوف تخبو

حرارة الدمع في الشؤون

Feign forgetfulness as much as you wish; soon will die down

the heat of tears upon the eyelids.

وسوف تبلى على الليالي

غرائب السحر في العيون

And, as the nights pass, there shall wear away

the wonders of enchantment in the eyes.

أستغفر الحب سوف يبقى

على صروف الأسى حنيني

I ask Love’s pardon—what will endure

through sorrow’s every turn is this yearning of mine.
