ألفتُ النوح بعدك والسهودا

وودّعتُ التصبر والهجودا

I lamented and prostrated after you left

And bid farewell to patience and calm

وأضمرت الأسى لما تولّى

زمانٌ كان لو دمتم حميدا

I harbored sorrow when time passed

That would have been auspicious had you stayed

وقد رقّت دموع العين حتى

لتحسبها لرقتها خدودا

My tears flowed copiously as though

You'd think my cheeks a stream bed

بليتُ من الغرام بكم ولكن

أرى كلفَ الفؤاد بكم جديدا

I suffered from love for you but

My heart is stubbornly attached to you still

وما طمع المعذّب أن يراكم

وقد ضنّ الخيال بأن يعودا

The tortured has no hope of seeing you

Since imagination refused to recreate you

إذا ما قلت أجلى الوجدُ عني

تذكرتُ المعاهد والعهودا

When I say heartache has left me

I recall our vows and promises
