لم تنسني فتنة الدنيا وزينتها

ما في شمائلك الغراء من فتنِ

The allures of this world have not made me forget you,

None of your beautiful features have tempted me.

أطوف بالحسنِ تصبيني بدائعهُ

كما يطوف معنّى القلب بالدمنِ

I wander around with beauty, yet your wonders drench me,

As the heart's longing roams around the blood.

فلا تثيرُ مغانيه ونضرتهُ

في ظل ذكراك غير الهم والحزَنِ

So do not provoke its songs and blossom,

In the shade of remembering you, nothing but grief and sorrow.

آمنتُ بالحب لولا أنت ما جمحت

منى الضلوعُ إلى أهلٍ ولا وطنِ

I believed in love, if not for you I would not have

Moved my ribs toward a family or homeland.

يا من تحيّرتُ لا أدرى أيُسعدني

غرامهُ أم هواهُ محنةُ المحنِ

O you whom I was confused, not knowing whether

Your passion or infatuation was the ordeal of ordeals.

ما ضرّ لو نعمت عينايَ أو شقيت

قبل الفراق بمرأى وجهك الحسن

It would not have harmed if my eyes had slept or suffered

Before parting, in sight of your beautiful face.

لولا مثالك في باريسَ ألمحهُ

في طلعة البدر أو في نضرةِ الفنَنِ

If I had not glimpsed your example in Paris,

In the rising of the moon or in the blossoming of art.

ما صافح النوم أجفاني ولا احتملت

جوانحي ما أثار البين من شجَنِ

Sleep would not have befriended my eyelids, nor would

My heart have endured what separation stirred of passions.

جنَت علي الليالي غير ظالمةٍ

إني لأهلُ لما ألقاه من زمني

The nights charmed upon me, but not oppressive,

I am fit for what I have encountered of my time.

فما رأيت من الأخطار عادية

إلا بنيتُ على أجوازها سكني

So I have not seen ordinary dangers,

Except I built my peace upon overcoming them.

ولا لمحت من الآمالِ بارقةً

إلا تقحّمتُ ما تجتاز من فنَنِ

Nor have I glimpsed any hopeful glimmers,

Except I plunged into whatever art I transcended.

أحلتُ دنياي معنى لا قرار لهُ

في ذمة المجد ما شردتُ من وسن

I made my life an endless meaning,

In service of glory, however far I wandered.
