يا قومُ ما هذي شريعة الأدب

ولا بهذا الشغل قالت العرب

O people, this is not the way of proper conduct,

Nor is this what the Arabs have ever said.

أتقبلون عابد العزيز

وليس بالمترو ولا الوزيزي

You accept the worshipper of al-Aziz,

Who is neither refined nor respectable.

وترفضون طاهر الأعراق

الشاعر الحنذيذ عبد الباقي

Yet you reject Tahir al-Aaraq,

The sweet poet Abdul Baaqi.

وتزعمون أنكم في جامعه

ممنوعةٍ من الفساد مانعه

And you claim to be in a university

Free of corruption and vice.
