    سمح الدهر بأعطاف الغزال

    After so many long years

    When time allowed the gazelle's return

  2. كدت لا أعرف من هذا الغزال

    غير أنوارٍ لطاف وظلال

    I could barely recognize this gazelle

    Except for gentle lights and shadows

  3. شادنٌ ظنّ بأحلامي الظنون

    ربّ ظنّ هو من علم اليقين

    My imaginings rejoiced

    Every imagining approaches certainty

  4. فانثنى عنى على أن يستبين

    أنني في حبّه الروح الأمين

    Yet it shied from me, wanting to become clear

    That I, with a faithful spirit, love it

  5. ابن عمّ البدر في النور الشفوف

    ابن عم الظبي في الثغر الرشوف

    Cousin of the full moon in its soft light

    Cousin of the doe with charming lips

  6. بخيالي كنت في حلمي أطوف

    بجمال هو عن وصلي عزوف

    In my dreams I would roam

    In a beauty that was aloof from my union

  7. نظراتٌ هي من وحي الحنان

    بسماتٌ هي من زهر الجنان

    Glances inspired by tenderness

    Smiles like flowers of paradise

  8. وقوامٌ من أماليد لدان

    صالحٌ للهصر في كل زمان

    A figure made of flexing branches

    Fit for gathering at any time

  9. لا تسل عنه فما عندي خبر

    عن غزالٍ هو بالوجد أمر

    Do not ask about it, for I have no news

    Of a gazelle commanded by passion

  10. أنا وحدي آسرٌ ذاك القمر

    والبيان العذب نارٌ وشَرر

    I alone captured that moon

    And the sweet rhetoric is fire and sparks

  11. قال لي تعرف ماذا أعرف

    يا غزالاً بفؤادي يعصف

    It said, "Do you know what I know?

    O gazelle raging in my heart

  12. ما سرارُ القلب مما يعرف

    ما ضمير الروح مما يوصف

    The heart's secrets are not known

    Nor the soul's conscience described"

  13. لست أدري ما الذي أنت تريد

    يا غزالا بالحسن شَرود

    I do not know what you want

    O gazelle, wandering in beauty

  14. أنا أدري أنا أدرى ما تريد

    وضمير الصب شيطانٌ مريد

    I know, I know what you want

    And the soul of a youth is an obedient devil

  15. كلّ ما ترجوه أن يحيا الوصال

    كالذي كان لأيام الدلال

    All you hope for is the union to live

    As it was in the days of dalliance

  16. كلّ ما ترجوه ضلالٌ في ضلال

    إن قلبي كله ملك الجمال

    All you hope for is misguidance in misguidance

    For my heart is possessed by beauty

  17. أحور العينين معسول الحديث

    ولأهوائي وأحلامي بثوث

    Doe-eyed, mellifluous in speech

    To my passions and dreams a nag

  18. إنه الألحاظُ من تلك البهوث

    وهو السلوان من قلبي جثوث

    It is the glances of those coquetries

    And it is the saliva from my rotten heart

  19. إنه يذكر ليل اسكندريه

    وهدير البحر يطغى في العشيّه

    It reminds me of the night in Alexandria

    With the roaring sea at dusk

  20. وهدير القلب أرواحٌ فتيّه

    صادحاتٌ بتغاريد شجيّه

    And the roaring heart, youthful spirits

    Screeching with piercing laments

  21. شهر يوليو أنت يا شهر عزيز

    جاز فيه الحب أو كاد يجوز

    July, you are a precious month

    When love was allowed, or nearly sanctioned

  22. شهر يوليو أنت كنز من كنوز

    كل ما فيها نفيسٌ وعزيز

    July, you are a treasure of treasures

    Everything in you is exquisite and precious

  23. أرقب الأيام استوحى هواك

    وأناجى في صباباتي صباك

    I watch the days, inspired by your love

    And whisper in my rhapsodies your morning

  24. وأناغى روحك الثاوى هناك

    فكأني حين أرآه أراك

    And mourn your soul lingering there

    So when I see it, it's as if I see you

    حين يصبى مهجتي ذاك الغزال

    All my days are beauty upon beauty

    When that gazelle rains upon my innermost being

  28. أحرامٌ قتل روحي أم حلال

    إنني أعشقُ ذيّاك الضلال

    Magic that killed my soul or made it lawful?

    I love that misguidance

  29. يحسد الأتراك فيه العربُ

    درمليٌّ للهوى ينتسبُ

    The Turks envy in it the Arabs

    A Druze belonging to passion

  30. من أبوه وهو للحسن أبُ

    ليس للأقمار أمٌّ أو أبُ

    From his father, and he belongs to beauty

    Moons have no mother or father
