فررتُ منكم إليكم

فجئتُ أسأل عنكم

I fled from you to you,

I came to ask about you.

أخاف أن تنكروني

خان الزمان فخنتم

I fear you will deny me,

Time has betrayed, so you betrayed.

قد جئت أنشد قلبي

قلبي الذي قد أسرتُم

I came to recite my heart,

My heart that you have captured.

ردّوه عدلاً وإلّا

فالعدل فيما ظلمتم

Give it back justly, or else

Justice is in what you wronged.

قد جئتُ أسأل عنهُ

وجئت أسأل عنكم

I came to ask about it,

And I came to ask about you.

لا تسألوا كيف حالي

فالحال في الحب أنتم

Do not ask how I am,

For my state is you in love.

نزلتُ بالخان أشكو

من غربتي ما جنيتم

I stayed at the inn complaining

Of the estrangement you caused me.

عن داركم حدّثوني

قد بنتُ عنها وبنتم

Tell me about your home,

For I built about it and you built.

لا دار إلا بوجد

وما أراكم وجدتم

No home but with a beloved one,

And I do not see you as my beloved.

الدار تشكو جفانا

ومصدر الشكو أنتم

The home complains of barrenness,

And the source of complaining is you.

الدار تسأل عمّا

كانت وكنا وكنتم

The home asks about

What it was, what we were, what you were.

لو عدتُ عاد صباها

وعاد ما قد عهدتم

If I returned, its youth would return

And what you got accustomed to would return.

هل يسأل الحبّ عني

وأنتمو قد صددتم

Does love ask about me,

While you have blocked me off?

هل تعرف السر مني

وأنتمو قد جهلتم

Do you know the secret from me,

While you have been ignorant?

لا تعجبوا من عتابى

إني حييت ومتّم

Do not be surprised at my reproach,

For I live and you died.

دار الغرام تريني

من لوعتي ما جحدتم

The abode of passion shows me

What anguish you denied.

أزورها بخيالي

وخاطري إن بخلتم

I visit it in my imagination,

Though you begrudge my memory.

أوّاهُ من نار حبّ

من وقدها قد نجوتم

Woe to the fire of love

That you ignited and I escaped.

لو شئت أن تصطلوها

لما سهرت ونمتم

Had you wanted to extinguish it,

You would not have stayed up at night or slept.

الدار تشكو جفانا

ومصدرُ الشكو أنتم

The home complains of barrenness,

And the source of complaining is you.

إني أراها وأدرى

من سرها ما طويتم

I see it and I know

What secret you concealed.

أحجارُها عاتبات

على الذي قد صنعتم

Its stones reproach

What you have done.

أطيارها شادياتٌ

بغير ما قد شدوتم

Its birds sing sadly

Unlike what you have accustomed them to sing.

الحبّ منكم برىءٌ

فلا عفا الحب عنكم

Love is innocent of you,

So love has not forgiven you.

أينقضى العمر عتباً

على الهوى وعليكم

Will my life pass in reproach

Upon the passion and upon you,

ولا تجيزون رفعى

شكواي منكم إليكم

And will you not allow me

To raise my complaint from you to you?

متى أراكم وألقى

شكواي بين يديكم

When will I see you and meet

My complaint before you?

عندي حديثٌ طريفٌ

يروقكم لو سمعتم

I have charming discourse,

You would like if you heard it.

عندي الذي قد جهلتم

عندي الذي قد علمتم

I have what you are ignorant of,

I have what you know.

لا تهربوا من لقائي

ويلٌ لكم إن هربتم

Do not flee from meeting me,

Woe to you if you flee!

لو شئتُ طرتُ إليكم

لأشبع الروح منكم

Had I wanted, I would have flown to you

To satisfy the soul with you.

بيني وبين حماكم

دقائق لو سمحتم

Between me and your sanctuary

Are minutes, if you allow.

أخاف أن تنكروني

خان الزمان فخنتم

I fear you will deny me,

Time has betrayed, so you betrayed.

البيتُ مني قريبٌ

وإنما البعد أنتم

The house is near me,

The distance is only you.

فما شقاوة روحي

يا غ غادرين سعدتم

So what misfortune of my soul,

O betrayers, you have brought joy!

وصلتكم فمللتم

هجرتكم فشكوتم

I united with you, so you were bored,

I was estranged from you, so you complained.

ما للصبابة عقلٌ

جنّ الهوى فجنتم

The youth have no mind,

Passion has tempted, so you tempted.

أعلنتُ حبى فثُرتم

كتمته فغضبتم

I declared my love, so you rebelled,

I concealed it, so you were angry.

لو طار روحي إليكم

لقال روحي وقلتم

Had my soul flown to you,

My soul would have said and you would have said.

وأزعجتكم شجونٌ

من نارها قد سلمتم

And my laments disturbed you

From a fire you have been safe from.

لن تثبوا لعتابي

وإن جهلتم فصلتم

You will not repent my reproach,

Even if you do not know and detach yourselves.

في سنتريس نبغتم

وفي سيوطَ أقمتم

You thrived in poetry,

And you settled in Suyooti.

ما أصلكم أنبئوني

لأقبلَ التوب منكم

Tell me your origin,

So I may accept repentance from you.

دعوا فؤادي دعوه

يفرَّ منكم إليكم

Leave my heart, leave it

To escape from you to you.
