يا طيف تمثال الزعيم الشهيد

أثرت في الصدر كرام الشجون

You have stirred noble sorrows in my heart

ولحت للنفس مثال الخلود

وإن تعامت عن سناك العيون

And presented to my soul an image of eternity

Though eyes may be blind to your brilliance

أطفتَ بالقوم فما استقبلوك

إلا بذكرى من وفاءٍ هزيل

You were kind to your people, yet they did not

Welcome you except with pathetic loyalty

فاعذر سقاك العهد من أنكروك

لا يعرف الجاحد وجه الجميل

So forgive those whose pact disowned you

The ungrateful know not the beautiful face

سجنتُ أزمانا وطال العقيق

فاغفر إذا أعيا عليك النصير

I was imprisoned for ages in sorrow

So forgive if your helper grows weary

القوم أسرى ليس فيهم طليق

أيرتجى المسجون غوث الأسير

My people are all prisoners, none are free

Can the jailed expect aid from the captive?
