Of charming elegance and wit

طاهر القلب ألوف

راجح العقل حصيف

Of pure heart and dear friend

Of sound mind and good sense

مغرىً بشعرى يرويه وينشده

بنغمة كبغام الظبي غنّاء

Alluring me with his poetry he recites and sings

In a melody like the singing of a gazelle

أكاد من طربي أشدو به شغفاً

شدو الحمائم في شجراء زهراء

I almost sing along in rapture

Like the cooing of doves in verdant bowers

عينان هاروت لم يظفر بسحرهما

تحاولان برغم الصون إصبائي

Eyes of an angel whose magic they could not resist

Trying despite modesty to captivate me

وجمّةٌ فخمةٌ لو شئت همت بها

هيمَ المضلّل في أعطاف ظلماء

A noble brow, if it willed, could make

The lost wander in dark labyrinths
