    من زمانٍ بكم شحيحٍ ضنين

    I carry greetings to you

    From an era that was miserly and resentful with you

  3. ما رأت مصر قبلكم من نجوم

    مشرقاتٍ كاللؤلؤ المكنون

    Egypt never saw before you stars

    Radiances like concealed pearls

  4. ترسل النور كالحقيقة صرفاً

    لتبيد الظنون بعد الظنون

    Sending light purely

    To destroy illusions after illusions

  5. يفتن الفنّ أهله حين يمسى

    بسناه شرارةً من فتون

    Art captivates its people when it becomes

    A spark of passions in them

  6. فاجعلوه بعقلكم ونهاكم

    غاية الروح من عفافٍ ودين

    Make it with your minds and restraint

    The spirit’s purpose of chastity and faith

  7. يا حوارِيّ في المعاني وحزنى

    وجنودي فيما تثير شجوني

    O my disciples in meanings and my sorrow

    And my soldiers in what stirs my passions

  8. لست أنسى وكيف أنسى زمانا

    هو في الدهر غرةٌ في الجبين

    I do not forget, how can I forget an era

    That is in time a bud on the forehead

  9. نبدأ الدرس والأصائل تصغى

    عن شمالي ما شئت أو عن يميني

    We start the lesson while the roots listen

    From my left what you wish or from my right

  10. أرسل السحر من بياني إليكم

    فاق سحر البيان سحر العيون

    I send the magic of my rhetoric to you

    The magic of rhetoric exceeded the magic of eyes

  11. يا شبابا ما خاب ظني فيهم

    أتخفوني بفنكم أتحفوني

    O youths my hopes were not disappointed in them

    You overwhelm me with your art, you gift me

  12. نشأ الفن عندنا فابعثوهُ

    بعثة الزهر في أعالي الحزون

    Art was born with us so send it

    Like the blossoming of flowers on the peaks of sorrow

  13. ما شدا قبلنا على الدهر شاد

    بنشيد من لوعة وحنين

    None pulled the age before us pulled

    With a melody of agony and yearning

  14. ما سطا قبلنا على الدهر ساطٍ

    يعطم الدهر فاتكات المنون

    None controlled the age before us controlled

    To tame time so the appointed time was late

  15. أعصرٌ قد مضت وأنتم بعصر

    سادر في ضلاله مجنون

    A sober era has passed and you are in an

    Era lost in its misguidance, insane

  16. لا تلاقوه بالتلطف منكم

    إن حظ اللطاف حظ الغبين

    Do not meet it with your kindness

    The share of kindness is the share of the foolish

  17. ما لحرّ إذا تلطّف حظ

    في زمان مجرح العدل دون

    What is the use of freedom when it is kind

    In a time when justice is wounded

  18. كل من عاش بالتلطف يمسى

    وهو في كربة الجريح الطعين

    Everyone who lived with kindness ends up

    While he is in the agony of the wounded and wretched

  19. أين من ينفع الوفاء لديهم

    ارشدوني إليهمو أرشدوني

    Where are those who loyalty benefits

    Guide me to them and guide me

  20. قد خبرتُ الأنام خمسين عاماً

    أين ما قد غنمت بالخمسين

    I have experienced people fifty years

    Where did I gain in the fifty

  21. إن عمري الذي اضعت رهينٌ

    لبلادي أكرم به من رهين

    My age that I wasted as hostage

    To my country, I honored more than a hostage

  22. يا وزير الشؤون والوعد دينٌ

    كن لهذي الفنون خير معين

    O minister of affairs and a promise is a debt

    Be for these arts the best supporter

  23. إقترحنا عليك إنشاء دار

    يلتقى عندها رجال الفنون

    We proposed to you establishing a house

    Where the men of arts would gather

  24. فأجبت الرجاء لطفا وظرفا

    صانك الفن يا وزير الشؤون

    You responded to hope kindly and eloquently

    May you be protected, minister of affairs

  25. يا وزير الشؤون إني لأرجو

    أن نرى الدار في سنا تشرين

    O minister of affairs, I do hope

    We see the house in the splendor of October

  26. معرضٌ للكتاب قد نظّموه

    فوق دار تضاء بالياسمين

    An exhibit for books they organized

    Above a house lit by jasmine

  27. قلت أمضى إليه كالبرق وثبا

    وكتابي إلى العلا بيميني

    I said I will go to it as lightning pounced

    With my book in my right hand to the heights

  28. كتبٌ صغتها بروحي وعقلى

    قد أنافت نوراً على الأربعين

    Books I composed with my soul and mind

    That emitted light over the forty

  29. جمعتها السنون من عبقريّ

    بات يشكو من كربه بالسنين

    The years collected it from a genius

    Who complained of his distress over the years

  30. إن غفا فالكتاب حلم كراهُ

    أو صحا فالكتاب خير خدين

    If he slept, the book is a dream he disliked

    Or if awake, the book is the best companion

  31. عالمٌ ما له على الدهر مثلٌ

    حين يمضى إلى اجتلاء اليقين

    A scholar that time has no equal to

    When he passes away to the absorption of certainty

  32. شاعرٌ يسمع الزمان غناءٌ

    هو باللطف سلوةٌ للحزين

    A poet time hears his singing

    It is with kindness a solace for the sorrowful

  33. عاب قومٌ عليّ أني فخورٌ

    أجد الناس في الفضائل دوني

    Some people blamed me for being arrogant

    I find people below me in virtues

  34. فليجيدوا كما أجيد ليسموا

    إن أطاقوا الذي يطيق وتيني

    Let them excel as I excel to rise

    If they can endure what I can endure

  35. إنني فاخرٌ بنفسي لأني

    في زمانٍ ما لي به من قرين

    I take pride in myself because

    In a time that has no peer for me
