Afflictions and sorrows assail the resolute,

As the raging winds erode the rock.

My heart may have hardened, but my ambition

Rose above the arrogance of fate.

Do not assume that time, however cruel,

Will one day force me onto a ship of misery.

    My defiant soul refuses to bear injustice;

It shares the hardship that unjust times bring.

I do not praise those whose prosperity grows

While Egypt’s enemies sit on burning coals.

By these long, dark nights that bear witness

To my misery which brought so much panic -

If the usurper does not willingly leave the Nile,

His stay among us will be worse than blasphemy.

The people will call down fury and vengeance

Upon the disgrace he has brought Egypt.

The betrayed will frown and glare,

The bereaved will cry out in reckless rage.

The men of the Nile will become roaring lions

Baring fangs in a chill of slaughter and war.

The enemy was wrong to be deceived

By the raging sea’s surge toward the shoals.

The lions roar as they lie waiting,

Like water boiling in a covered pot.

Did it not occur to them that when stars fall

They become missiles that shouts cannot deter?

God refused to let us perish, for in us remains

A remnant He is too proud to see in shackles.

So how can the heavens crash down upon a people

As valued as those of the West, if they came to help?

Enough, sons of Numidia, cease plundering souls

Who strive to live under the dazzling stars.
