مضى الأمسُ والدنيا ستمضى سريعةً

فليس لأيام الحياة بقاءُ

For the days of life have no permanence

مضى الأمس لم أعرفك إلا رواية

لها من تهاويل الرياء طلاء

Yesterday has passed, I did not know you except as a tale

With appearances of hypocrisy as its facade

أأنت حبيبي أنت طالت شكايتي

وطال غرامٌ يائسٌ وعناء

Are you my beloved? My complaints about you are long

And a hopeless, weary passion has lasted long

تسافر من حلوان ظهرا لكي ترى

أليفا له هليوبوليس ثواء

You travel from Helwan in the morning just to see

A friend in Heliopolis find comfort

وتمكث عندي لحظتين بلهفة

وتمضى كأن الوصل منك هواء

And you stay with me for a couple of moments anxiously

Then you leave as if being with me is just air

لقد ضاع من حظى رجاء عقدته

عليك وما في الناكثين رجاء

My hopes which I placed in you are now lost

And there is no hope to be found in the unfaithful

إذا صدّق الروح الصدوق حديثهم

أجابوا بوعد كاذب وأساءوا

If the trusting soul believes their words

They respond with lying promises and do wrong

يقاتلني فيكم فؤاد معذب

به من هواكم شقوةٌ وعناء

A tortured heart battles me over you

With misery and toil from my love of you

إذا رضته بالصبر عنكم تخايلت

له من سناكم أنجمٌ شفعاء

When I pacify it with patience from you, it imagines

From your brilliance, stars as intercessors

بكل لموح من صباكم بوارق

فصاح كأقباس الصباح وضاء

With every gesture from your youth, banners

Cry out like the dawn's rays shining bright

إذا قلت عينٌ كالعيون تمردت

سواحر منها أمرهنّ قضاء

If I say an eye like eyes, they rebel

Sorceresses whom their command is fate

وإن قلت خدّ كالخدود توهجت

بخديك في ليل الوصال ذكاء

And if I say a cheek like cheeks, yours glow

With your cheek the night of union shines bright

وإن جال طرفي في ثناياك أشرقت

شوارق يعلوها سنا وبهاء

And if my eyes roam over your figure, rays shine

Rays atop which glory and beauty rise high

أتبسِمُ لي وحدي صدقت فما الذي

يكدّر روحاً أنت فيه صفاء

Smile at me alone, you spoke truthfully, so what

Clouds a soul in which you are pure clarity

أغار فقلبي لن يخون وإنه

ليشهد أن الناس لي غرماء

I am jealous so my heart will not betray, and it

Witnesses that people betray me

جمالك ردّ القاهرين عصبةً

من الشر باءوا بالخسار وباءوا

Your beauty turned back a group

Of oppressors, they left in loss and in plague

إذا جئت من حلوان تنشد رؤيتي

تهاوت قلوب واستطار بلاء

When you come from Helwan to visit me

Hearts collapse and turmoil spreads

جمالك لي وحدي وإني لشاعر

إذا قال حرفاً يسجد الشعراء

Your beauty is for me alone, and I am a poet

If he says a word, poets bow down

تكايدني بالصد عمدا عفا الهوى

عفا عنك روحي للحبيب فداء

You spite me by rejecting on purpose. Love pardoned

My soul pardoned you, my beloved, as sacrifice

نفرت نفور الظبى ضاع رشاده

وقد لاح صيّاد وغام نجاء

You recoiled like a fleeing gazelle, losing its guide

As a hunter appeared and danger drew near
